Looking to change my GPS help needed please

Hello all!

I've been caching for a few years now quite successfully using a Garmin 60CSX, I really like the look and robustness of the device but I want to go paperless, or at least not have to create a text file that I can read on my iphone....

I've settled on the Garmin 62SC, I know the camera isn't great but travelling extensively, I like the idea of being able to grab some quick geotagged snaps without having to use a seperate camera or my phone. The only reason I haven't bought one so far are the problems that have been mentioned previously to do with text rubbing off buttons, buttons degrading quickly due to low quality rubber being used and problems with software. I've read that these issues "MAY" now have been resolved since the first units became available, but I would like a confirmed YES or NO to have these problems now been ironed out.

Thanks for your help,

Pacar :D

I can't comment on that model GPS but did you know you can go paperless on your iPhone with the geocaching app and Pocket Queries? That also allows you to work 'offline' in case you have no mobile connection.

But he might get bored carrying his car battery around charging the thing if the series he is doing is more than 7 caches big ...

I just had a quick look and for a small amount more (if I've got your model number correct) you can get a 650 which has a lovelly camera on it. It is supposed to be equal to the iPhon 5 one. I would say it is but the GPS picture is darker. But then it doesn't shatter the GPS battery when you use it a lot and as you say they are geotagged. Has GLONASS which in our experience is a good addition. Though everyone you speak to moans about it being useless. We don't have a problem and we have two. Slight variation on the odd day at maybe one cache. Else they work exactly the same. The touch screen is excellent. Paperless - excellent. GPX file transfer with either gsak or drag and drop excellent. Battery life excellent. Has a torch intergrated and permits searching with the torch on as you continue to navigate to the cache. Processor speed with 4000 caches on is no different than if it has 1000 on it. To be honest we had the 450 before and it was a dream. Had a go of one of these and it is the best of the montanna (a relative has one of these) and the best of the 450 (we had two of these (all rolled into one). We live it. Pinch screen - map touch rotate. I mean it does it all but find them for you.

One moan - I don't trust the back securing method. Pin and twist affair. Like the 450's clamp.

If you don't care about the camera garmin 450. Cheap robust ... cheap.

well i hope you like it.

When you sort it make sure you log into garmin and get the latest update. It will be glitchy until you do this. Switching itself off and crashing lots. Its the same with most of them apparently (garmin products untill they have been out a while)

Then -

Case - yes they do ship to the uk and they send it fast. When we bought ours it was a bit convoluted but I think its simpler now. However they do NOT make your GPS float like the Oregon 450 case did. Its just too heavy - http://www.gizzmovest.com/GizzMoVest_OREGON_600.cfm

Screen protector - You can get cheaper but these are what we bought. Arrived fast touch screen unaffected - http://www.amazon.co.uk/atFoliX-Garmin-Oregon-650-Protector-1-FX-Clear-crystal-clear-3-pack/dp/B00B8CGL0M

Rechargeable batteries - http://www.7dayshop.com/aa-rechargeable-batteries/7dayshop-aa-ni-mh-high-performance-rechargeable-batteries-2900mah-4-pack

You can get the batteries in bigger amounts at a slight discount I think. You need to get the 2900 mAh ones though. And make sure you select the correct battery on the GPS.

I'm sure I will, I really like my Garmin 60CSx, the only downside was having to prepare so much stuff to have hints and descriptions with me. As for screen protectors, I ordered those from eBay the day I bought the device, I've always put screen protectors on to mobile phones, TomTom's and my 60CSx, I can't beleive more people don't make use of them.

I ordered a case like this Garmin Case from the same company I ordered the unit from and had seen the case to which you've spoken about. I think I'll order one of those in the near future.

Thanks for the links to the batteries, I have some "AA" rechargeable batteries that I currently use in my 60CSx which I would have though would work ok, although the mAh will be a little lower, can you comment on if these will work ok???

Sure sorry I missed this post

Basically it's how long the battery will be able to serve you. The higher the mAh the longer the battery wil last. From battery specialist.com (other sources available) - http://www.batteryspecialists.com/mah.htm

As for which type they are you can choose which type are inserted into the GPS but you must select that type in the GPS battery menu system. Quite what happens if you don't is a mystery to me but if it involves genitalia and pain I follow the rules and I've been warned.

Hi!

I've been looking at the case that you've recommended to me, have you noticed any damage to the rear of your device from the metal belt clip? I was wondering about covering the metal in a strip of "gaffa tape" to prevent any scratches? Would that work? I've found that Gizzmomoves sells on ebay which will make the purchase quite swift.

Regards,

Pacar :D

When we finally upgraded to the 650 from the 450 I did notice a dulling of the clip locking mechanism on the 450. Caused as you say by the metal belt clip of the gizmovest. So when we got the 650 which doesn't have the metal bracket at the back to protect it like the 450 had, we removed the metal clip from the gizmovest and use the lanyard instead. The clip isn't a secure option anyway but the lanyard is. It's easy to do and the instructions show you how.

One word of caution when using just the lanyard - never climb a tree wearing it. It will not break. It will probably not break in 20 years. So if you do fall from the tree it may snag on a branch and it will be your neck that does break. There are purpose built lanyards which have a quick release clip at the rear just for this reason. However chances are they will fail just when you are leaning over a drain looking for w cache. It's one of those inevitable laws of fate. Best of luck.
