Quxote
Is there anyway Free members can start and maintain a cache? A Paid membership is really not possible for me at the moment, things are to tight at home. I actually started geocaching is a hobby that doesnt cost anything at all. I use my smartphone as my GPS and a free andriod app to log and find. But i would really like to start my own caches. Quote Link to comment
+ngrrfan
There's nothing stopping you from hiding a cache and submitting it for review/publication. Quote Link to comment

If that were the case, there would be a lot less caches out there. First thing you need to do is read the Guidelines. Then read them again and again. http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx A fundamental guideline is that you must obtain as accurate as possible coordinates. It is highly recommended that you read all the Help Center articles about hiding a cache: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.book&id=1 Hiding Your First Geocache http://www.geocaching.com/about/hiding.aspx B. Many of the more prolific hiders in your area (or any area) are probably Premium members, so I can see where you may have gotten that impression. But no, you don't have to be PM to hide a cache. Where it might cause a problem for you, however, is if there are a lot of PMO caches in your area. You may run into proximity issues with caches that you don't know are there. Nothing that can't be worked around, but just be prepared for that possibility. Quote Link to comment
Quxote
Thanks......maybe I can get a PM soon...or ask it as a gift from my family..I just cant swing that right now. Quote Link to comment
+Walts Hunting
This raises an interesting point. Can a basic member create a PMO cache that he then would not see in a search. Quote Link to comment

If a premium member creates a PMO cache then doesn't renew his PM and goes back to basic membership, he can still view HIS PMO cache, however he can't change it to non PMO. Quote Link to comment

No, one has to be a PM in order to be able to set any owned caches to be PMO. That is one of the perks of being a Premium Member. A problem arises when a PM becomes a Basic Member, and neglected to change their PMO caches back to public prior to becoming a Basic Member. They can no longer change the cache back to public without the help of a reviewer or Groundspeak.(Adoption by a Basic Member of a PMO cache creates the same scenario.)
