MrLifeboat Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Hi folks, I am soon to be travelling to Edmonton (alberta), I also plan to take a road trip through the mountains (banff/Jasper) I am looking for a mapset that i can upload to my garmin GPS and will show me the terrain for the local area. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Quote
Viajero Perdido Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 (edited) You'll want Ibycus 4.0. Free, and pretty darn good. Here's where I downloaded my copy: http://hotfile.com/list/1629447/a614b22 (Caution: ginormous!) Edited June 24, 2012 by Viajero Perdido Quote
MrLifeboat Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 Thanks for the help.Just downloading the last part of this file now. Takes a while with this host. What do I need to do once it is downloaded? Is it straight forward? Quote
MrLifeboat Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 Thanks you for your help with this problem. I now have ibycus maps installed on my GPS. The only problem I have found is that I need to zoom right in almost to the maximum level just to see the detail on the map. Quote
Viajero Perdido Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Glad it worked. For more detail without zooming all the way in, try setting your map detail level to More or Most. Quote
MrLifeboat Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 No luck. Tried this already and it doesn't seem to make a difference on the GPS (GPSMAP 62s). Not to worry to much, I am sure I can manage one way or another. Whilst I have your attention, would you care to recommend a few 'must do' caches in the Edmonton area. Would be much appreciated! +Red90 Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 If you are planning any hiking add these as well: http://albertatrailmaps.ca The Ibycus maps should show at normal zoom levels. How did you get them to the GPS? Quote
MrLifeboat Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 I used mapsource to transfer the files. Quote
Red90 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 At what zoom level are you seeing the contour lines? Do you have other maps turned on at the same time? Quote
Team K1W1 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 While there aren't topo maps you could also look at OSM maps: http://www.osmmaps.com/canada.html Quote
Viajero Perdido Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 I just got back to the internet. Cache recommendations for Edmonton (or anywhere) really depend on what you like. Puzzles? Walks? Drive-ups? For a start, you could set up a PQ for the area, click Preview, then click the Favorites column heading. Quote
