WizardWize Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I discovered this issue when I would download multiple caches to my Garmin etrex then caches that I knew I had successfully downloaded were not present. After I began manually writing down the 7 digit codes I would notice my etrex would only store 6 digits then if two caches were the same ###'s but with 2 different ending digits it would only save the last six digits of the last 7 digit codes stored. Does this make sense to anyone? What can i do? Has anyone else experienced this problem? I got my first Garmin gps 12 in 1998 but only began geocaching in 2012. I have very limited tech experience and definitely need help from those in the know...... Quote
+user13371 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 (edited) Which model eTrex? And how are you sending them to the GPS? Edited February 14, 2012 by Portland Cyclist Quote
+webscouter. Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Use GSAK to upload the caches and strip off the GC at the front. You can do this by using %drop2 as the code to transfer. Quote
+Red90 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I think you can use the free easygps as well to do this. Quote
WizardWize Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 I am using the base model etrex and I am downloading the caches from geocaching.com. How can I remove the gc front two digits before downloading? theoretically this would resolve the problem and also disperse my caches into different categories rather than all being stored in the g's. please keep the help coming Quote
Wintertime Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 How can I remove the gc front two digits before downloading? Use a text editor to open the .gpx or .loc file, change the waypoint names, then save the file. You can use a full-fledged word processor such as Microsoft Word instead of a plain-text editor, but if you do, be careful to save the file as a plain-text file, no formatting. Quote

You can't. You can use GSAK or EasyGPS to solve this as others have mentioned. Quote
Wintertime Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Ah, Coggins, I thought he meant downloading from his computer to his GPSr, but you're right, he did say "downloading from geocaching.com." So I amend my suggestion to clarify that I was talking about editing the file after it's downloaded from Gc.com. Quote
