7 digit waypoint entries not campatible with etrex 6 digit capacity?

I discovered this issue when I would download multiple caches to my Garmin etrex then caches that I knew I had successfully downloaded were not present. After I began manually writing down the 7 digit codes I would notice my etrex would only store 6 digits then if two caches were the same ###'s but with 2 different ending digits it would only save the last six digits of the last 7 digit codes stored. Does this make sense to anyone? What can i do? Has anyone else experienced this problem? I got my first Garmin gps 12 in 1998 but only began geocaching in 2012. I have very limited tech experience and definitely need help from those in the know......

I am using the base model etrex and I am downloading the caches from geocaching.com. How can I remove the gc front two digits before downloading? theoretically this would resolve the problem and also disperse my caches into different categories rather than all being stored in the g's. please keep the help coming

Use a text editor to open the .gpx or .loc file, change the waypoint names, then save the file.

You can use a full-fledged word processor such as Microsoft Word instead of a plain-text editor, but if you do, be careful to save the file as a plain-text file, no formatting.

Before you download? You can't. You can use GSAK or EasyGPS to solve this as others have mentioned.

Ah, Coggins, I thought he meant downloading from his computer to his GPSr, but you're right, he did say "downloading from geocaching.com." So I amend my suggestion to clarify that I was talking about editing the file after it's downloaded from Gc.com.
