worstcaster
Does anyone use the VZNavigator to geocache? My garmin went missing @ work and thinking of using my phone for turn by turn @ work instead of replacing. Never used it so not sure if coordinates can be entered and off road navigation is possible. Also is the GPS function available even if there is no cell signal, as long as there is a GPS signal? Quote Link to comment
Hemorrhage
I believe it requires a cell signal to retrieve data for the maps. The maps are not stored in the phone so they must be downloaded as it is used. I also believe that vznavigator is a subscription based program costing around $10 a month. I think you would be better off in the long run picking up a used nuvi or etrex. It would almost pay for itself after a year compared to vznavigator. Quote Link to comment
dymogeek
VZNavigator is subscription based. And yes, as long as you get a GPS signal, it can locate you. But if you do not get a data/cell signal, it won't be able to load the maps. If I were you, I would get the Geocaching app or buy a used unit like Hemorrhage suggested. For non-geocaching, driving around directions, in the Google Maps app I have, there is a "Navigate" option (not to be confused with VZNavigator) that does vocal turn-based directions which is free. The icon looks like a blue arrow pointing up. Quote Link to comment
Hemorrhage
Another thing to think about if using vznavigator is how much data you pay for each month. If you are on an unlimited plan it wouldn't be a problem, but if you only have 2 gigs each month that can add up fast and the overages will really hurt your wallet. Quote Link to comment
kennethb53
If you have an iOS/Android device, Televav is a better solution for turn-by-turn directions. It is free but the paid version ($9.99/year) adds spoken directions too. As others have said, a used etrex is better for caching than the phone would be. Quote Link to comment
