+trippy1976 Posted May 1, 2002 Posted May 1, 2002 Forgive me if this is a dead horse or already implemented. I've yet to place a cache so it could be out there... but I just came accross this geocache rating system http://www.clayjar.com/gcrs/ I think this kind of thing would be just swell to provide consistency in rating caches. So as I said, I've yet to place a cache myself, but is there anything in place to keep the rating from being purely subjective? A few quick questions like the ones on that page would provide a metric and some consistency for new caches. -------- trippy1976
+Dekaner Posted May 1, 2002 Posted May 1, 2002 I'd like to see an option listing the different ways to get to a cache. Options would include: by foot, by bike, by boat, by rollerblade, handicapped accessible, etc. Of course my reasoning may be selfish as I just bought a new mountain bike.
+Jamie Z Posted May 1, 2002 Posted May 1, 2002 Trippy, The ClayJar rating system (the name which leaves out the contribution of many, many others) has been around for quite a while. In fact, there is a link to that rating system on the hide a cache page. The problem, as you've demonstrated very nicely, is that many people just don't know about it. People don't care, or don't look, or something... The rating system is in place (and it's a pretty good rating system) but folks just don't use it very much for some reason. But... I'm glad you brought it up again. Now maybe just a few more people will be aware. Jamie
+trippy1976 Posted May 2, 2002 Author Posted May 2, 2002 I was wondering if something like that was built into the new cache system. Like I said, I had never placed on and I'm about to so I found that cache rating system. Thanks for pointing out that it's linked right from the add a cache page. Should build in some level of consistency in cache ratings. -------- trippy1976

It hasn't built that much consistency yet. Maybe the font needs to be a little bigger than font=1... Markwell My Geocaching Page

+Markwell Posted May 2, 2002 Posted May 2, 2002 I suspect your being a little facetious, however... See, that's just what I WOULDN'T suggest. Best example I've given before: One of my distant caches turned up as a 3/3. But I also know that at the time, I never took my then-five-year-old son on level 3 caches, and he actually helped me PLANT the cache. So I lowered the cache's terrain rating according to human discretion. It's still higher than I would have originally put it, (it's a 2.5), but as I said, people tend to underrate their terrains anyway. Markwell My Geocaching Page
LazyLeopard Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 I was being half-serious... If the hide-a-cache page insisted on the questions being answered, but the edit-a-cache page allowed for numeric adjustments... ...it'd be one more thing for folks to trip over, but it might help? +Brokenwing Posted May 3, 2002 Posted May 3, 2002 Just thought I'd mention again that I developed an ASP version and sent the source to Jeremy, so integrating this a little better onto the site should be pretty easy. I actually think integrating it into the "hide a cache" page would be a good idea as long as folks could change the result after use. Aside from integration, another critical piece to ensure people know about this is to publish it so that SEEKERS also are aware of it. It needs a much more prominent place on the site. Some hiders have seen it, but plenty of neocachers have never hidden a cache so they likely have never even seen the page where this is linked. I'd like to see it linked on EVERY CACHE PAGE as well. Finally, for those that were not part of those early discussions where we developed this system, here is a little light reading: System Developed: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000456.html GCRS Developed: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000506.html ASP Developed: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000957.html Some other old threads on this subject: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000331.html http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000652.html http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000665.html http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000322.html http://forums.Groundspeak.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000006.html Scott / Brokenwing http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching

I was about to suggest this same thing and did a search first and found your suggestion. Has this idea been discussed? Since I started geocaching I've stopped riding my mountain bike and I want to do both. Sometimes we get to a cache and discover that we could have riden our bikes, so this metric would add a lot of enjoyment for us at least and I could start to get back into biking shape. Thanks, mila
+sbell111 Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 A feature has been discussed in the 'General' forum that should take care of this for you. Take a look at the 'Condition icons' thread.

+planetrobert Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 a 3year old topic from the bone yard, GOOD JOB
+Markwell Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 But an interesting question. The forum links were obviously not updated when we changed message board companies. I'll see if I can dig up some of the topics through the search feature.
