AZcachemeister Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 While posting some recoveries yesterday, I suddenly noticed there is no longer a map of the mark's location on the BM page! Correct me if I'm wrong (As I grow older I seem to be having more and more vivid memories of things that never happened.) As I recall, the maps were never particularly useful, but if they have been left out in the last site update it could be yet another indication that Benchmarking is slipping off the back burner to be left mouldering in limbo... forgotten behind the stove somewhere. Correct me if I'm wrong (As I grow older I seem to be having more and more vivid memories of things that never happened.) You, sir, are correct. They removed it. I really miss that little map. As simple as it was, it came in VERY handy as a preview to a mark's location. Sigh. Quote
+Harry Dolphin Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 That happened with the last downdate, a few weeks ago. I miss them. I also miss the 'Search for a benchmark' from the main page that disappeared a few downdates ago. I'm relegated to ScaredyCat (which while great! Runs very slowly on my machine.) Working on a vacation trip hoping to color in a few counties. Columbia County, Wisconsin, here I come! Also one in Minnesota near where I'm going... If we're just being swept behind the stove, it's unfortuante, but we're still here. I'm afeared we're going to be downgraded with a downdate, and tossed into WhyBotherMarking. If so, I'm done. Oh, well. It's been fun. Quote
Wintertime Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I just tried several of the mapping options from one of the benchmark details pages. The Geocaching.com Google Map and MyTopo Maps options brought up the appropriate maps all right, but did not have a pushpin or crosshairs to indicate the benchmark's actual location. The other ones I tried (such as the plain Google Map) did have the proper indicators. There's probably a discussion of the Geocaching.com Google Map beta going on in the Groundspeak feedback forums; it might be a good idea for benchmark hunters to participate in that discussion and remind Groundspeak that we want pushpins for benchmarks as well as geocaches in the final release of the new maps. I briefly looked through the feedback forum and found a few discussions about the beta maps, but nothing about the benchmark indicators. Patty Quote

Oh, well. It's been fun. I'm with you there, O finned one. Even if Benchmarking gets unceremoniously dumped in with whymarking, I will still continue to report to the NGS. Quote

You may have noticed that the small maps have also disappeared for geocaches. I think that they want us to use the various map options in the upper right section of the page. As Patty mentioned, pushpins would be of great assistance. Quote
+BasicPoke Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 (edited) Why are you guys so down on Waymarking.com? I make waymarks of survey markers that are not in NGS. Search in the "U.S. Benchmarks" category at zip code 74012 for example. I agree there are a lot of dumb things in there, like McDonald's locations, but there are some neat ones too. I hope geocaching.com keeps the benchmarks, but it may also be acceptable to dump the benchmark database into Waymarking, as long as all the logs are kept. http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMBKDZ_City_of_Tulsa_Field_Engineering_C14 http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMBF7Y_State_of_OK_SH66_bridge_over_Bird_Creek http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMBCZM_GG0826_SHIPPEY_Azimuth_Mark http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMAM9R_USACE_LB12_1_1989_Alsuma_Soccer_Park http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMA15P_US_Dept_of_Agriculture_1000_R2_1939 Edited June 6, 2011 by BasicPoke Quote
TillaMurphs Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Why are you guys so down on Waymarking.com? I like Waymarking. It has some interesting categories. It also gives me a place to submit orphan benchmarks. Quote
