nam69
Just in case I have a failure out in the field is there any certain brand of a compass I should buy. Something thats decent. I have a engineer directional compass that refuses to point North on all occasions and we cant have that. I do like the lensactic type compass as thats what I used in the Army. Just looking to buy one that is not junk, Thanks guys, Pete p.s. still didnot get out yet. My legs and feet are not up to it yet but I am willing as soon as I have a good day I will be out there, easy caches first. Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
Nothing beats a good topo map of the area and a silva compass. But a second GPS in the bag and spare batteries with the built in compass on my Casio watch have always been enough for me. Quote Link to comment
nam69
I would like to see what the viewer looks like on this model. I am thinking it would work like a lensatic?? I am also looking for a good site on map reading and compass use. Since I am house bound I can brush up on my skills, Thanks ahead of time, Pete http://www.thecompassstore.com/dql16a.html Quote Link to comment
+autigerman
Cammenga makes the compasses for the U.S. Army. Mil-spec is the tritium one. The civilian version is phosphorescent. Either of these is readily available. I picked up a tritium one from eBay a couple of years ago at about half the MSRP. One word of warning, if you go with tritium be sure to check the expiration date before buying it. Now I just need to find the time/resources to learn to properly use the thing! Quote Link to comment
+Gitchee-Gummee
My choice is the lensatic Cammenga -- and yes, I have one, but then I am prejudice. Used a lensatic to take me many, many klicks and back. Once the lensatic is mastered, there isn't much better. Quote Link to comment

Pup Patrol
Check out the Comapass Store's links, down at the bottom of the page you linked to: http://www.thecompassstore.com/howtousemapa.html http://www.thecompassstore.com/whatisdec.html http://www.thecompassstore.com/decvar.html http://www.thecompassstore.com/howtouseyour.html Quote Link to comment
+autigerman
Cammenga has a link here for information on "LAND NAVIGATION with MAP and LENSATIC COMPASS". If you google how to use a lensatic compass you will come up with more links than you know what to do with. You can even find the military manuals on how to use the compass. Quote Link to comment
shrekTBA
i like the Brunton AR8096 GPS compass. You can use it to get coordinates off a map to the GPS and the other way as well, works great, tough enough that mine has been in my pack for a couple of years and looks and performs as new. Opticsplanet.com has them for about $20. Quote Link to comment
