gwnga
What is the proper way to log a benchmark that has been reset? For example, PID AA2838 was destroyed during road construction, but a benchmark with the same designation was reset (FY 02 reset). The details on the Geocaching website do not reflect the current NGS Datasheet for this station, I may have made a mistake by logging this find. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks, Greg Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
In Missouri,I talked to the DNR and State Surveyors. The mark is usually set at the same point, unless otherwise stated. The Cost of setting these marks are high and there is a second mark underground in case the surface monument is disturbed. +beejay&esskay
I took a look at the picture posted for AA2838, and it isn't a standard NGS disk, but rather a disk from a local construction firm. Also, the NGS site has this as the last entry for AA2838: quote: AA2838 STATION RECOVERY (2001) AA2838 AA2838'RECOVERY NOTE BY FORSYTH COUNTY GEORGIA 2001 (JMK) AA2838'MARK IS DESTORYED THE CURBED TRIANGULAR CONCRETE APRON, LOCATED IN THE AA2838'MEDIAN OF BALD RIDGE ROAD, BETWEEN THE OFF AND ON RAMP OF HIGHWAY 400 AA2838'SOUTH TO BALD RIDGE ROAD WAS REMOVED BY A DOT CONSTRUCTION CREW, ROAD AA2838'PROJECT. If a mark is reset, would we expect the NGS to have a reference to that fact? Is it "kosher" for a local firm to do their own reset if their construction destroys the mark? (And, somewhat related, I've found a NGS disk marked "reset" locally, but the NGS site says "to be reset" and never had an entry that it was. Normal?) Quote Link to comment
Z15
There are specified procedures for resetting a BM. I have done it many times. NGS requires the following information before they will publish it. They have form to fill out. [This message was edited by elcamino on March 13, 2003 at 05:20 AM.] Quote Link to comment
survey tech
Yes, resetting markers is and always has been kosher, and is very often done by contractors who have proven that they have the capability to do it properly. In the past it was more difficult to reset a marker in the exact same place and this was seldom attempted. Thanks to technology, it is now easier to accomplish and will probably become increasingly common in the future. This marker may or may not be in the same place. It was reset very recently, so the data has not been fully processed. Presumably, it will show up in the database eventually, either under the same PID with an updated description, or under a new PID with slightly different horizontal and vertical data, if it is not in exactly the same place. Pending that information, I would have to consider the original AA2838 not found, since the original disk is obviously no longer in place and there is, at present, no way of positively determining whether the new disk marks the same point Quote Link to comment
Z15
Here is one we reset a few years back. We set the disk, did the level work, checked and rechecked it. Set it to the NGS state advisor along with all the field notes and he took care of publishing it. Took about 1 month. He told us many times that he gets a lot of resets from others who do not do the work properly or use sub-standard equipment. quote: The NGS Data SheetSee file dsdata.txt for more information about the datasheet.DATABASE = Sybase ,PROGRAM = datasheet, VERSION = 6.73 1 National Geodetic Survey, Retrieval Date = MARCH 14, 2003 AE9966 *********************************************************************** AE9966 DESIGNATION - E 329 RESET AE9966 PID - AE9966 AE9966 STATE/COUNTY- MI/MARQUETTE AE9966 USGS QUAD - NEGAUNEE (1975) AE9966 AE9966 *CURRENT SURVEY CONTROL AE9966 ___________________________________________________________________ AE9966* NAD 83(1986)- 46 30 43.
