kmz to GPS?

Recommended Posts

I have a map that is in kmz format. I would like to transfer it to my GPS (an Oregon 450), though preferably to the memory card as opposed to the actual GPS. I have only found one way of doing this, and it required a $60 or so payment to get software to do it. Is there any way of doing this for free without downloading something with a virus?

Place(copy) the .kmz file in a Garmin\CustomMaps folder on the micro memory card. You will have to create the folder path if you have not done so already.

The file is ready to use on the GPSr.

Who thinks you need their software to do this?

That was why I posted, I thought Garmin would be smart enough that you wouldn't have to pay $60 for software to download maps from a program that they show how to make maps on... :P

By the way, thanks. It worked. :P

Copy it to the memory card using a USB card reader.

That said, since you can't remove the memory card without removing the batteries, in the case of Oregons it's a lot easier to just load stuff onto the card via USB.

That $60 software is for those who want to load raster data into units that don't support the new Garmin Custom Maps feature. If it's a KMZ from gpsfiledepot.com, it almost surely is generated with all of the Garmin Custom Maps restrictions in mind. (Other KMZs aren't guaranteed in this regard.)
