+IndyTycoon
My actual first find was on the side of the road that I saw on top of a concret post, but for some reason when I stopped to look at it, there where no markings. I looked in the geocaching.com site and the usgs site and neither have it listed. It looks like it's been there for quite some time. Anyone ever had that happen? http://www.friskynet.com/bm.jpg Quote Link to comment
+Black Dog Trackers
Yes, people often report that they've found a survey marker and it isn't in either the NGS or the Geocaching database. (Geocaching gets its database exclusively from the NGS.) Thousands of survey marks of various kinds, including disks, are not in the NGS database. These marks were not submitted to the NGS by the surveyors (either commercial or governmental) who established them, often because the additional expense involved in doing so wasn't part of their project. Since these survey marks are not in the database, you can't register them in the Geocaching site as a find. This situation has been discussed in this forum here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and here, and ........ This sort of question is asked a lot and the responses are very informative, so I figured I'd put a collection of the last 4 months' worth here for reference for future similar questions. I can't make out from the picture what is on the marker. Were there actual words? And was the post next to it labeled as a witness post? And where was it? Quote Link to comment
+IndyTycoon
I thought I had a better picture, I'll go get another one. I do believe it said US geodetic sp? survey. $250 fine. It is located about 30 feet off the east side of hwy 238 just north of the Hancock/Hamilton County line near Fortville, IN. Quote Link to comment

Wow, is this a record for being Markwelled? Thanks for putting the links in one spot, I'm sure we'll make good use of it. Quote Link to comment
Wild T2
It looks like an Indiana State Highway mark to me. Quote Link to comment
+IndyTycoon
I'll go by it tomorrow and post any other info on it. I thought the Indiana highway markers are thinner and do not have a disk in them. Quote Link to comment
+IndyTycoon
Finally got by that benchmark, and is IS a Indian Department of Transportation Benchmark disk. Sorry for all the confusion... Quote Link to comment
+WaldenRun
I assume that by "blank", you mean no disk specific stamping. That is not unusual for the state highway department here in MA. In fact, I just happened to take a picture of one today while looking for this mark. -WR "Besides physical caches, we have VIRTUal and VIRTUeless." Quote Link to comment
