I've known about this sign for years, go by it at least every year on fall color runs, but I finally remembered to take a picture of it. I'm sure it serves a purpose, but I have no idea what.. it seems kind of silly at first glance. Anyone know what it's for?

We did briefly search the immediate area, didn't find anything but the ground growth here was pretty thick, and it drops off quite severely several feet behind the sign.

Here's the photo.

Thanks!

I have seen highway plans that show the letters POST on it with a station (i.e. 123+45.6). I believe POST stands for Point On Straight Tangent.

Perhaps this sign is intended to reference a particular highway station.

I could not find (post) as a point station in the survey books.

I would agree with Boundsgoer that POST most likely stands for Point On Straight Tangent. It is also known as a Point On Tangent (POT) or Point On Line (POL). Local and regional nomenclatures may be different, but it all means the same thing.

POST in surveying would mean "Point On Survey Tangent"

But that sign probably has nothing to do with surveying, might be making some underground utility etc.
