Oregon 450 map question

With my 76CSx I can load maps directly to the unit. The ads for the Oregon 450 talk about maps on a card. Is it still possible to load the maps directly to the Oregon 450 or do they HAVE to be the ones that come on the removable card?

You can load maps onto a removable memory card. When you connect the OR to your computer it will show up as two drives, one with a triangular Garmin logo and one without. Load the maps to the drive without the logo. If you load the maps from an app like MapSource or BaseCamp it will create a gmapsupp.IMG in the Garmin directory. The OR will support multiple IMG files so you can rename it SomethingIRecognize.IMG and add more maps.

You can also load maps directly to the 450 (as opposed to on a removable card). I have maps loaded directly on the 550t and on the 4GB removable card in my unit.

So do you have to have an SD card to load new maps on the Oregon 450? It doesn't come with one does it? I have an Oregon 450 on order and I would like to put some free maps on it when I get it or try the custom map feature but I don't have a SD card yet.

Yes you can, as long as the unit has enough free memory (and normally it does).

You don't need an SD card until you run out of memory on the device.

My 450 just loads with one, the one with the triangle garmin logo. Am I doing something wrong?

Depends, do you have an SD card in the unit? If not, you're good. If so the computer is not seeing the card. Try reinstalling the card or formatting the card in a card reader.

Just remember the 450 takes Micro SD.

Well, that seems it could be it. It was not "locked" into place. I tried turning on the unit and now it freezes up. I think what I was trying to do with maps may have been wrong. I think I need to wipe out the card and try again..lol

Any tips?
