rain theory
I was getting fed up with searching for benchmarks these past few days, about 90% I could not find, so I decided to check on one that someone had told me about recently... The benchmark was set in a concrete mount for a cannon (right hand corner in pic), and has a very interesting altitude stamped on it. . Very cool. - - - rain theory - - - Quote Link to comment
survey tech
Thats a decimal point not a comma, note the altitude printed on the data sheet. This is an excellent example of a very wisely chosen location by the surveyor who set it. The cannon mounting is not only very solid and stable, but its historical value virtually guarantees that it will be protected for a very long time. Quote Link to comment
+M&M
Are you sure the comma isn't a period? I bopped over to TopoZone and took a peek at the map. The BM looks to be right near 480 feet. The altitude of 484.382 makes a lot more sense. I'm out west, and spend a fair amount of time in the mountains. I've seen some seemingly outrageous precisions placed in BM's on mountain summits, not unlike what I think we have here. Quote Link to comment
rain theory
I noticed that about the altitude after I posted, although you can't really tell in the pic, it does almost look like someone tried to make the dot look like a comma. (looks like a small line more than a dot up close) Thanks for the input! - - - rain theory - - - Quote Link to comment
