  1. quote:A little off-topic... But the post cards mentioned above reminded me of something. I recently released a travel bug in a cache on vacation with the goal of it coming home. I seriously considered having a bunch of stamped, self-addressed post cards with it to be mailed to me by the finders along the way. I didn't because I wasn't sure how I felt about giving out my home address. Having self-addressed post cards in caches might be interesting for those a bit less paranoid than I. 3. I am quite an audio archivist myself, (field recordings and such), and I think that is a great idea... although a digital recorder would withstand heat better than the traditional analogue tape, and it would be more difficult to accidentally erase logs, I'm sure not many people have those just lying around. Regardless you would still have the situation with the batteries... still a great idea, may do that with the first cache i place. - - - rain theory - - -

  5. this would have to be the coolest i've found, although it was fairly easy to spot since it was on a cannon mount. here is one near burkittsville maryland, where the infamous "blair witch project" was filmed. - - - rain theory - - -
  6. One thing I have been worried about while caching is poisonous snakes. Where I live there are only two known kinds. Copperheads, and Timber Rattlesnakes. Unfortunately my uncle had a frightening ordeal with an unprovoked timber rattler, and it left him in ICU for two and a half weeks. Where this happened is very close to at least 4 caches that I know of. I have been debating leaving notes in the logs of these caches regarding this possible danger. - - - rain theory - - -
  7. I noticed that about the altitude after I posted, although you can't really tell in the pic, it does almost look like someone tried to make the dot look like a comma. (looks like a small line more than a dot up close) Thanks for the input! - - - rain theory - - -

  9. I was getting fed up with searching for benchmarks these past few days, about 90% I could not find, so I decided to check on one that someone had told me about recently... The benchmark was set in a concrete mount for a cannon (right hand corner in pic), and has a very interesting altitude stamped on it. . Very cool. - - - rain theory - - -

  11. Well, then you may want to play that BM # in the lottery sometime, you never know! - - - rain theory - - -

  13. quote:It was pretty cool meeting other geocachers out on a hunt, and I hope to meet some more. One thing I always think about is what if someone approaches me when I'm checking out a cache? Just seems like no matter who it is, it would be weird to know that someone is seeing you searching through some box in the middle of the woods. LOL i've been paranoid of that too, oddly enough. but its not like we are doing anything illegal. I usually try to face the trail, and/or the direction I came to be sure if someones coming. - - - rain theory - - -
  14. I like exploring historic, run-down, abandoned, houses, buildings, quarries, factories, towers, missile silos etc. etc. etc. and 99% of them have about 90% of the worlds "NO TRESSPASSING" signs. and some have survellance i think. But, down to the point. I am thinking of taking my newly-purchased GPS to these locations to create waypoints either at them, or before the no tresspassing stuff. Knowing the potential risk, I'm sure nothing like this could be associated with geocaching, but my question is: are there enough people out there that like these things as much as i do, and would be willing to get waypoints from them for possibly an "abandoned waypoint" site? - - - rain theory - - -
  15. all logs on caches I've been to are automatically e-mailed to me, wish i could tell you how i made it that way, but i can't seem to stop it either. LOL - - - rain theory - - -

  17. Hey I saw those exact same ones, I almost got one but couldnt decide if I would be able to put it to good use, though you have a very neat idea! - - - rain theory - - -

  19. I just found this benchmark today, but it seems to have been dug up from the field and tossed to the side of the fence. The disk and everything is still intact, its just a huge concrete slab thingy layin there, not in the ground anymore. It seems to be close enough to the original location that my GPS led me right to it. Should I count this as a find even though the marker is no longer in the ground?

  21. ditto on the development thing, I have searched for a few that were supposed to be located on bridges etc. and the bridges have been replaced since then. But don't stop looking for ones not recovered since 1942, a good bit of the ones I've logged have not been recovered since they were monumented (or at least not mentioned that they have been), I have also found a few that were claimed to have been destroyed, not found etc. Although I generally don't spend too much time searching if i see there is alot of new development in the area, but I give it the benefit of the doubt most times, you never know! - - - rain theory - - -

  23. this may be the benchmark page for the BM, if so, than it obviously is not "on" the cannon itself (unless the vandals who stamped it to say 65,000 feet also moved it to the cannon itself). I will hopefully visit this one soon and see for sure. - - - rain theory - - -

  25. Was out searching for a BM today, and a local resident informed me that it had disappeared while the bridge was being re-surfaced. This struck up a conversation about local BMs and he told me about one he saw that was mounted on the barrel of a cannon, and had an altitude of 65 thousand and some odd feet stamped on it. I got directions to this benchmark (although I havent seen it yet) and hopefully I can find it and take some good pics to post here. Anyone hear of benchmarks being "vandalized" in this way? - - - rain theory - - -
