Heathrow Caches

Hi!

 

Are there any caches that can be found while on a layover at Heathrow?

 

1. Anything within a safe (not too much traffic) walking distance ?

 

2. Anything where i could hop on a bus or a train, ride to a spot, get a few caches, ride back to the airport?

 

Even better if the caches are easier to find and not too tricky.

 

I am hoping to have 5+ hours at the airport in a few weeks.

Looking at the list, there are no caches actually within the airport perimiter, as would be expected for security reasons. But there are lots within a short distance.

There are a few you should be able to do on foot from there, assuming you don't have a lot of luggage to haul around.

 

I enjoyed the Big Box Little Box series (near the easternmost point of the airport compound). If you base a pocket query around the cache GC190Y0 you'll get a few - that's a puzzle cache with posted coordinates towards the south-east of the compound.

 

If you're talking about terminal 5 that's the far west of the compound, in which case the Staines Moor series might work, again depending on how fast you can move around and how much stuff you're hauling. Not a series I've done, but on the hit-list for when the weather is better.

Quite a lot of the caches nearest to the airport are mine, but none of them are what I would call "airport caches". They are outside the airport, and not really easy to reach on foot. Also the Staines Moor series is not really ideal terrain for travel clothing - nettles, brambles, bogs, wading in river and so on.

 

The nearest ones for you depend greatly on which Terminal you'll be at. If you can let us know that, and do a search for caches near that terminal, we'll describe the caches so you can decide if they are suitable.

Just looking at the Geomap around Heathrow there is a trail of caches outside Hatton Cross Tube station on the Piccadilly Line which serves all the terminals. The first cache is GC2079M

 

Or, you could catch the Heathrow Connect (not the Express which uses the same line) from any terminal and travel to Hanwell and do the string of WTF caches along the Grand Union Canal starting with GC17E36

Once there you can start at GC2079M. And you'll bag 8-10 caches along a trail by a very narrow river.

You can either double back or do a circular walk heading West, if you have the time.

You won't find the most inspirational of caches but you'll see a part of London no one apart from US sees. This is what we do after all.

The Big Box Little Box series (starting with GC2079M) is a good series but it can get very muddy underfoot. Worth keeping in mind if you've only got the one pair of shoes and have to get on another plane...

 

I really liked them but it took me a while to clean the mud off my bike afterwards.

You are confusing NC with West Virginia!

I am really a Finn, so i will be wearing boots made of reindeer hides. Or clogs.

 

I will have one more plane to catch that day, but i do not mind a little bit of mud. I just don't want to fall into the river.

Yes, no problem there at all. Depending on when you are coming over I may be able to pick you up and take you round some caches, but I'm out of the country for the next few weeks myself.

If you're doing BigBoxLittleBox you enter the trail at number 6 and follow it until you reach 1. There's a slight detour for 2.

 

The trail is easy enough to follow, if it's been raining it will be very muddy underfoot. It should give the people who examine shoes at the airport something to enjoy though...
