unable to save selected route after upload

After I upload the gpx and click the checkboxes next to the two routes that are stored in the gpx file, this error message pops up.

What am I doing wrong?

Also, apparently, another of my routes does save after I upload, but when I try and locate it within Your Created Routes, it's not there. All my other created routes are and ready to have pocket queries made, but not the one that I just uploaded. These are basic gpx files that I've generated from Mapsource .gdb files using a basic "save as" command.

Can you supply any more information? From your initial post it sounds like you might be trying to upload multiple routes at once. I've never been able to do that successfully. Also how long is the route - it needs to be under 500 miles I believe. Did you try logging out and back in? Did you reboot the computer? Lately there is a new naming convention for the routes you do on the Google map. As a possible stop gap did you search public routes for something useful?

The image i attached in the OP shows that the route is only 137 miles. The preview button nor the "Save Selected Routes" button does anything.

I have tried this in IE and Firefox with the same results. I have logged out and logged back in, with the same results. I have rebooted my computer. I have tried this on multiple computers. I have tried uploading a gpx file with only one route (187 miles long) and it previews and seems to save because the page goes back to the Find User Routes Near Your Trip page. But when I click on Your Created Routes, the route is not there- though my previously created routes are.

And no, there are no public routes near where I'm going.

okay that about exhausts my ideas. Where are you going? I can't see your image from my work computer so it doesn't help me. Did you try creating the route using the new google maps option?

I would upload my gpx file if I knew how. it's pretty complicated and was originally built in google map, but then translated into Garmin Mapsource by hand, and then exported to gpx. i've exported lots of gpx files from mapsource without any trouble until now.

is there any way to directly get in touch with customer support here?

j2x, send me your GPX file at moun10bike at gmail dot com and I will see if there is an issue with it.

Sometimes the error you are getting will be seen if you back up in your browser after uploading the file. Please visit http://www.geocaching.com/my/userroutes.aspx, select the "Your Created Routes" tab, and confirm that you don't see the uploaded routes there already.

I followed the link. There is a route named, "Route Friday, July 17, 2009 10:28 AM" that is new, but it is 0 miles long and has no information in it when I try and preview.

Thanks for sending me your files. They revealed a couple of issues with the system.

First, the specifics of your GPX files were what were leading to the problem. Your Day 1 file actually contains two separate routes and this prevents the second one from previewing. However, the big issue with the files is that the special characters in the route names (ampersands and apostrophes) prevent the routes from saving.

There were some other issues with the files as well, although they won't necessarily cause problems with upload. (They did, however, make your problems take some time to track down!) The files were saved from Mapsource in a fashion that saves all of the points along the roads between each of the route points. This leads to a number of points in them that far exceeds the 500 point limit allowed by the system. The route in your Day 3 file, for example, consists of 5932 points. The system will ignore all of those extraneous points and only look at the route points, but you have those placed such that you are missing some of the details of your route on the upload. You also have waypoints mixed in with the routes, although the system will ignore those. Lastly, as mentioned you have two separate routes in the first file.

I have converted the routes in your files to individual tracks, removed the problematic special characters, and filtered the data down to below 500 points. By doing this I was able to preserve the general shapes of your routes and get them to upload to your account successfully. I'll now take a look at getting the system to provide better feedback to users when problems are encountered, to properly respond when there is more than one route in an upload, and to properly handle special characters in route names.

Thank you!
