  1. Streets and Trips 2010. Why? There's a show on fox on prime time named "*^&% My Dad Says" so I don't think I'm offending anyone. If I did, sorry.
  2. tried Spanner, but it's naturally not compatible with Vista. Frustrating Garmin. And my laptop doesn't have a serial port, just USB, and of course I expected the USB port to work. Thanks, James Edited to remove naughty language
  3. Can I use my Garmin GPSmap 76Cx as a GPS receiver with Microsoft Streets and Trips? I have updated the firmware and the USB drivers and still when I try to scan for available ports in Streets & Trips, it doesn't see the 76Cx. Any ideas? Thanks. James
  4. Folks, I was river rafting this last weekend and happily left a cache on an island (the only island cache in the area) that my group stopped at. I submitted my listing and received a rejection letter stating: I'm reviewing your new cache for listing on geocaching.com. I'm afraid it appears to be only 409 feet away from another cache, GCGJDD, Lots of Pictures #3. There is also a second cache (Campell's cache) only a short distance away as well. The guidelines state: "The reviewers use a rule of thumb that caches placed within .10 miles (528 feet or 161 meters) of another cache may not be listed on the site. This is an arbitrary distance and is just a guideline, but the ultimate goal is to reduce the number of caches hidden in a particular area and to reduce confusion that might otherwise result when one cache is found while looking for another." Now, my cache is traditional and normal sized, the nearby cache is micro and is on shore. Truly, if the river is very unusually low one could wade though hip-deep water from the shore to the island, but I would think almost anyone would need some sort of boat or raft to get there. I respect the reviewer and told him that I'd move it, but I strongly disagree that proximity between the caches is a good reason to reject my cache since one who finds the cache on shore is very unlikely to be able/willing to go out and find mine on the island. What do you think?
  5. My dad wants to buy one but I'm not sure how well it'll work for geocaching. Anyone do this?
  6. I followed the link. There is a route named, "Route Friday, July 17, 2009 10:28 AM" that is new, but it is 0 miles long and has no information in it when I try and preview.
  7. I would upload my gpx file if I knew how. it's pretty complicated and was originally built in google map, but then translated into Garmin Mapsource by hand, and then exported to gpx. i've exported lots of gpx files from mapsource without any trouble until now. is there any way to directly get in touch with customer support here?
  8. The image i attached in the OP shows that the route is only 137 miles. The preview button nor the "Save Selected Routes" button does anything. I have tried this in IE and Firefox with the same results. I have logged out and logged back in, with the same results. I have rebooted my computer. I have tried this on multiple computers. I have tried uploading a gpx file with only one route (187 miles long) and it previews and seems to save because the page goes back to the Find User Routes Near Your Trip page. But when I click on Your Created Routes, the route is not there- though my previously created routes are. And no, there are no public routes near where I'm going.
  9. did the name of my thread not grab anybody? no one can help? I'm leaving on this trip tomorrow morning and really need some help, please.
  10. After I upload the gpx and click the checkboxes next to the two routes that are stored in the gpx file, this error message pops up. What am I doing wrong? Also, apparently, another of my routes does save after I upload, but when I try and locate it within Your Created Routes, it's not there. All my other created routes are and ready to have pocket queries made, but not the one that I just uploaded. These are basic gpx files that I've generated from Mapsource .gdb files using a basic "save as" command.
  11. OH, mother F. I thought I tried that. thanks.
  12. Ok, since I'm obviously not communicating what I need, here's a screenshot of what I'm running into. WHY isn't this working?
  13. i did switch the drop down to Decimal Degrees. it doesn't seem to like the negative "-" sign in the coord.
  14. You switch the default HDD MM.mmm entry to HDD.ddd format. Jim um, in english please? i did a search for "HDD.ddd format" and didn't find anything, so thank you for your help, but please write directions that I will understand and/or can search for.
  15. I'm trying to do a pocket query from the coords: 45.586792, -123.553634 However, when I enter those decimal coords into the decimal degrees fields, I get a little red asterisk indicating, I guess, that this is an invalid entry. What do I do?
  16. I'm looking for a hand-held GPS for my dad. He's going to use it to go geocaching and to get him out of trouble if he gets lost on his motorcycle. The GPS would need to have street routing capabilities, though not necessarily auto-routing. It would need to either have enough onboard memory to load the state of Oregon or use a memory card of some sort. It needs to use AA batteries. All that said, if it were under $150 and easy to use, that'd be great. He is by no means looking for a new model, either. Any suggestions?
  17. thanks! just what i was looking for. if i had used POI instead of WAYPOINT in my google search i probably would'a found it.
  18. Anyone know of an online database anywhere that contains the locations (hopefully in a downloadable file and not just coords) of National, State, and County Parks? I'm having a very tedious experience just trying to get a handfull- I can't believe there isn't a central repository of this type of government information.
  19. OH! I thought those were just posts regarding the cache- i didn't realize that it was a record of found/not found. thanks.
  20. actually, I just tried that- and I might be missing something, but when I look at the Cache Page (like this one), I don't see any info for when it was last successfully found.
  21. Thanks! that'll help a lot
  22. Click on the cache to open the quick link telling you name and date placed, Click on the cache name, that will open a link to the cache page, which will show when it was last successfully found. Caches that are lost/gone do get removed/disabled/archived. thanks! that'll help (is there not a way to delete posts?)
  23. I'm new to geocaching and wonder if it's worth my time to go out and search for caches that were placed years ago. I find using the Google Map interface to locate caches very helpful, but when you click on a cache it only states when it was placed- not when it was last found. If caches are removed from the "wild", are they ever deleted from the online database? Thanks, James
  24. thanks for the replies. apparently I'm not as ignorant as I assumed- this DirectRoute software IS a joke. too bad, the unit itself seems solid.
  25. I have two dissimilar questions about using my MapSend DirectRoute v.2.0. First, is there a way for me to increase detail at larger scale displays? I mean, if I'm out in the middle of the country, zoomed to a scale of 1:200,000 all I can see are the rivers, lakes, and my waypoints- but NOT the BLM roads that I am intending to travel on. I'd like to print out a copy of my map to give to my wife so that she knows where I'm going (in case I don't make it back), but I can't seem to find a way to manually turn on the level of detail that I want. Quite annoying. Second, how do I build a street route from my waypoint route that includes turn-by-turn navigation that includes more points than just a start and finish? I've built a waypoint route with 42 waypoints and when I right-click on the route and select Street Route the only options that I seem to see are for picking a start and finish point- which misses almost all of the waypoints that I had created. Also, will Magellan ever offer an upgrade to MapSend 3.0- instead of scamming us into purchasing it even though we already own 2.0?
