In recognition of National Trails Day, the Forest Service is waiving the $5 entrance fee at the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest on Saturday.

Later in the season, the National Park Service will have three fee-free weekends, during which entry to national parks and historic sites is free, the park service announced Tuesday.

In Washington, Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, Lewis & Clark National Historical Park, Fort Vancouver National Historical Site and Whitman Mission National Historic Site all will waive entrance fees the weekends of June 20-21, July 18-19 and August 15-16.

A complete list of parks participating in the fee-free weekend program can be found at www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm.

The fee waiver does not count toward fees collected by third parties for reservations, camping, tours or concessions.

"Entrance fee"? Is this a waiver of the parking permit requirement, or something else?

I assume so, else it wouldn't be fee-free.

According to the linked page:

Fee waiver includes: entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees.

I asked because I know the National Parks have entrance fees, but I've never heard of National Forests having them (aside from monuments within them - but not generally). The blurb refers to "Forest Service", the link to NPS - two different agencies and sets of lands.

My guess is that you won't need a NWFS Pass for parking that week end.
