Custom Map on Garmin Quest II with TYP file

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if the TYP file will work on the Garmin Quest II I've sent a custom map file (.img) along with my .typ file, .txt file, .reg file, .TDB file, and .img file. to a friend and had him place them in the correct folders. TYP file worked well in Mapsource showing trail's custom colors, but the Typ file does not appear to be transferring the custom trail colors to the Quest II GPS. Custom Map trails did transfer, ok, just not in custom colors. Used MapSetToolKit and cgpsmapper for compiling.

Before I spend extensive time troubleshooting I wanted to make sure that this older model GPS should recognize a Typ file? Any suggestions on what to look at first in troubleshooting? Many thanks for suggestions.

I read somewhere that a unit that accepts Custom POI's will generally work with TYP files, and the Quest II is OK with POI's. However, the 276C doesn't accept POI's but typ files work fine on it.

Guess it's really a matter of trial and error as Garmin will never publish a list. Of course, we could start our own here

I've used TYP files on a 60Cx, 60CSx, 276C, Zumo 555, Nuvi 760, and a Nuvi 550 (although the 550 needs to be set to "Walking" mode before the even the custom trails will display).

Thanks Bob, After thinking about it more it should work because as you mentioned it is suppose to be able to accept Custom POIs and came preloaded with City Navigator v8 from Garmin. All troubleshooting is via phone, GPS is out of state so sort of a slow process. Plan to upgrade GPS's software first and then let GenTyp create the typ file instead of using what I emailed, somewhere the path or the code is not correct. I never had him run GenTyp, I didn't think it would be necessary, and all of this is very foreign to him.

I started off using the QuestII and it only has internal memory. Adding to that will keep a full PQ from being added, you'll get an out of memory error since they already come with NT 2008 already loaded.

He doesn't geocache at all so he won't be putting any PQs on the GPS. Just got through updating unit's software from v3.02 to latest, 3.10 and recompiled TYP file using GenTYP and sent new trail maps to Mapsource and GPS. Custom TYP trail colors appeared correct in Mapsource but TYP still did not transfer to GPS. All trails on custom trail maps appear on GPS just not recognizing TYP file on GPS; all trails appear red instead of green, blue, red, and yellow as they should. Any ideas??? Thank you.

I read on one of the map making websites that if you get a mismatch of FID and map ID numbers, then your TYP may work in Mapsource but not on the GPS.

Perhaps the best way to test it, is to use a self-installing map that has no user input, that way your friend doesn't need to mess with ToolKit etc.

If you don't know how to make auto-install EXE files, send me your MP, IMG and TYP files and I'll quickly convert them to a self installing EXE file. My e-mail is DualSport AT morphew DOT ca.
