Just wanted to introduce myself and my family. I have been reading the forums (getting started forum mostly) and really enjoying the reading. I've come away with a lot of good information:

1. What to put in a cache bag (I've got an Army mapcase I'm using right now).

2. Types of rechargeable batteries - gonna go w/ the Rayovac (or similar) hybrid. I've been using Energizer rechargeables for years and they're showing their age.

Fortunately, we've been able to get started on the cheap - so far, I've only spent the $30 on the premium membership and it's already paying for itself. Stuff we already had:

1. eTrex Legend (old serial model). I can download to it if I'm patient - get a lot of failed downloads. We also have an eTrex Venture.

2. Axim X5 PDA for paperless caching. Basically a "throw-away" from work. The guy who had it wasn't using it at all.

3. Already mentioned the Army map case.

4. Small digital camera.

5. Silva compass. BTW, these are *great* little compasses (compii?) and are available from Wal-Mart for about $10-12.

I don't yet have a logbook to put in the cache bag and, after today, I discovered I need a pen in there that can write in the rain.

We're all really enjoying playing. Thanks for the wonderful sport.

Welcome,

I just got started in December, and I deffinately have the bug. I got lucky and timed it just right to participate in the MML (Maryland Municipal League) trail. It is an organized event that takes you all over the State of Maryland. If you find one of these types of events in your area, go for it. You will have a blast! Most of the caches were easy enough for us newbies to figure out. It helps to prepare you for the "real" caches that you are going to get challenged by. Plus you get a lot of practice using your GPS unit. In the case of this event, you also got a custom geocoin (nice one) for finishing the requirements. Just thought I'd add this suggestion, as it helped me get started in a real easy way.

Hope you have a safe and fun time with this hobby. It is getting very very popular.

Don't forget a Maglite. A pair of gardening gloves is a good idea for pushing away brush, leaves, rocks, sticks, and other cover. A pair of tweezers to pull tiny logs out of tiny caches (I need to get one of these).

There are some good descriptions and photos of what people put in their bags. It's really a bit of common sense (compass in case your batteries go dead, cell phone in case you get into a sticky situation and need to call for help for any reason, first aid kit, etc.) and whatever items you might need that might be germain to your geographical area.
