Windows Mobile and paperless geocashing

Recommended Posts

I am looking for paperless geocashing software like Geocaching iPhone Application, but for Windows Mobile devices (with GPS or with external BT GPS).

I was wondering what are the options out there? I was using BeeLineGPS, but I am looking for something that can connect to Geocashing.com via internet (GPRS, 3G, HDSP, WiFi) and give me information that I can find on the site (browsing geocashing.com with PDA is difficult).

So far, I found Nearby Cashes that connects to wap.geocaching.com

and I read that people are using Geoscout, but unfortunately I was not able to install Geoscout on my TyTN ("Application Manager cannot install this application on your mobile device due to an invalid setup file. Reinstall and try again".

Is there anything else out there worth trying?

I love Geoscout, too bad you can't install. Be sure you have the latest version (http://www.navstation.co.uk/ and look under Geoscout in the d/l section on the left of the screen) and if it still doesn't work you could e-mail the author under the contact us tab; I e-mailed him and he worked through a problem for me in just a few days after I bought the product.

You could also try RichesseGPS, another good one and its free, I just like the functionality of Geoscout better: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-downlo...gps-v1-0-4.html

Good luck!

I like using Cachemate on my Windows Mobile device. It works quite nicely when paired with my Garmin GPS10x bluetooth GPSr. I have also played around a little with PowerNotes, an app from bish0p. PowerNotes looks like it is very nice, but by the tiem I started playing with it, I was already deeply ingrained in my use of Cachemate, and paperless caching with my Garmin Colorado, so I didn't play with it as much as I could have.

These apps can be found on the web through these links: Cachemate for PPC/Windows Mobile and Power Notes.

You should download the cab file for geoscout and transfer it to your tytn, then run the install from the phone itself. Here is a direct link to the download for the cab: http://rightfile.web.officelive.com/downlo...coutCESetup.CAB

I use it and find that it works enough to get you to the general area, but if there are any trees or buildings, it goes a little crazy.

I did, it installed by using CAB file, thanks!

I was using an HTC 8525 with a Holux GPSlim 236 bluetooth GPSr and recently upgraded to an HTC Touch with the same bluetooth GPSr. I've been using iGO 2008 to get me there on the roads and then switch over to BeeLine GPS when on foot. I use GSAK to get all my caches to BeeLine. I've found this combination to work perfectly!

I have been testing out Geoscout on the 30-day trial and I'm disappointed that I can't get it to download waypoints from the internet, so I've started manually transferring the loc files from my computer, but what I then discovered is that it only opens the files that have GC of 4 digits, not the 5 digit ones! Anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you so much for the recommendation of Basic GPS program, I love that it functions with google maps!

The only thing that could make me happier is if the iphone application worked on windows mobile, that seems to have everything all in one...

Anyone know if there is word of it coming to windows mobile?

Please send ma a copy of the files you are trying to import and I will see why you are not getting 5 character caches imported.

You are better off using the www.navstation.co.uk/geoscount url which should always be up to date. Unfortunately I am somewhat nomadic so my servers do change frequently. The rightfile.web.officelive url is intended to redirect you to the current server if it is available.

GeoScout is suitable for all Windows Mobile devices with touch screens, but some of the newwer WM6.1 devices seem to dislike my setup utility. Hopefully this is resolved with the latest builds, but if you still have problems, please contact support@navstation.co.uk

Oops - I'm afraid I've dragged this somewhat off-topic - sorry. To answer the original question, there are plenty of Windows Mobile programs that use an off-line database to hold and navigate to caches, but there's no web-linked do-everything application like the iPhone application or Trimble's Navigator for phones (that I know about). Both these work presumably through Groundspeak's proprietary API, and any Windows Mobile software is going to have to do the same, and I'd be extremely surprised if Groundspeak would provide API details to a hobby programmer like myself. So - we'll all have to wait for some "official" software - does anyone know if any such thing is being actively developed?
