Rules for hiding a cache

Since I'm new to geocaching, I know virtually nothing about cache hiding. I do know what kinds of things go into a traditional cache, but do I need permission to hide one somewhere (like national forest - or even from some kind of geocaching governing body if I hide it in my own yard?), and how do I get it registered here so that others can find it?

First, read and become familiar with...

and

Then, try and get involved with one of your local caching organizations...they will have alot fo the local info needed. For Utah...this would be a good place to start: http://www.utahgeocachers.com/

I think that in addition to reading and following the guidelines you should find a few more hides. See what others have done well and not so well. Think about who besides a cacher is going to find you hide. We have seen many reports about the bomb squad being called out because of a suspicious package being spot near a bridge, school, building, etc.

So enjoy the adventure to come and welcome. :)

After reading the gudelines, this might be helpful.

As far as your permission question, the answer varies. Some national forests require permission or a permit, most don't. Some state parks have a permit system, many don't. National parks and national wildlife refuges ban caches, as do some local park systems.

Once you are ready to submit your cache, just go to this page and click on the online form. A volunteer reviewer will look over your page to make sure it conforms to the guidelines and doesn't violate any known bans or permit requirements. If all is good, it will be published.
