ryleyinstl
Yes…the eTrex H will serve this purpose perfectly. Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
I find it really hard to recommend the Etrex H in modern times. For $100, you get a GPS that does no maps at all, is black and white, has a serial connection (so add the cost of a serial cable and, for most people, a USB/serial adapter and all the grief that goes with that), doesn't have geocaching mode, and is generally a turn-of-the-decade product, but with a high-sensitivity receiver bolted on. For $115 (street price) the Venture HC seems to be much more viable entry-level unit. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=...areProduct=8707 If driving over a large area is in your future and you forsee adding maps, I'd still move up a few notches in the product line, but that's not the question you asked. http://www.gpsfaqs.org/faqs/garmin/xseries...csx/models.html Quote Link to comment

I have a eTrex Legend HCx and it works fantastic. I don't even know if Garmin still makes the straight eTrex or not. I think it's on the "out of production" list. Quote Link to comment
+storm180
Why basically waste a $100.00 on a unit that is just the basics. You might want to look into one of the HCx models so you can upgrade the maps at a later time. If the kids don't like the sport then sell the unit and you can probably get back almost what you paid for it. If you plan on doing woodland caches then you want maps, its really helpful to know what side of the river or moutain a cache is on. I started with a forerunner 201 which I still have and made the mistake of hiking up one side of a moutain when the cache was actually over the moutain and across the river where I originally came from. With a mapping unit I would not have made that error. My advice is to get a middle of the line unit like one of the HCx and a 60CSx. They keep their resell value and people want them if you need to sell. At least with the HCx you have the option to expand if you need to.Might even want to look for a refurbed 60CSx. Spend the extra money now and the sport should be more enjoyable for you and your kids. I have taken kids out geocaching and they get really bored when your hiking to a cache and realize you went the wrong way or crossed the wrong river. It tends to make them not like the sport as much, like too much effort has to be involved. When you can go right to the cache the experience is very good for the kids. Quote Link to comment
+Redwoods Mtn Biker
For $115 (street price) the Venture HC seems to be much more viable entry-level unit. I agree. The Venture HC is the best entry-level model. It is just too easy to introduce errors when keying in waypoints by hand. Get the Venture HC, connect it to your computer and transfer waypoints without error. Quote Link to comment

I picked up a Venture HC last week and think it's great. I didn't want bells and whistles...just something that will guide me to waypoints. Quote Link to comment
ACarbone624
I love my eTrex H. I found a cable online for $12.99. I geocache with it and it works great! Quote Link to comment
