+Pengy&Tigger Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 (edited) Anyone any ideas how long would it take to cache / cycle. Family of 4 (2 girls age 13 / 11) Thanks in advance We cycled and cached that exact route in reverse last year (train from Thatcham to Great Bedwyn then cycled to Crofton to start there). It took us (2 adults) most of a very warm day but we ended up walking the last 5 miles with the bikes due to a split inner tube. I would think that you would be fine completing it in a day with the kiddies in tow. Edited June 15, 2008 by Pengy&Tigger Quote
+Bambography Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Not sure, really does depend on how fit you are. I did that set last September and having got off the train at about 8ish and cycling to the beam engine to start we finished in the dark, probably about 12 hours later. Neither of us are particularly fit and certainly havn't cycled 40miles in a day for about 10years! we did take on the pillars cache up above Kintbury too which is quite a slog up the hill! Much of the tow path is grass so takes longer than you expect. (we did also miss one due to the 'cache along a route' not quite following the canal, so watch out for that) It was a cracking day out though i have to say, good luck! Quote
+2202 Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Did it with Jolly Jaxs three years ago. Left our cars at Great Bledwyn station car park and cycled up to Crofton (circa 140 metres ASL) to start. Couple of days after the june equinox and it was sunny all day. The idea is that it is all down hill from there and you will need it. Good pub at Kintbury by the canal for lunch. Get to Thatcham (circa 64 metres ASL) and catch the train back. A couple of good pubs at Great Bledwyn too Down hill is better! Quote

Many thanks for the tip regarding the caches along the route but just off the canal. There seems to be three of them. We will probably skip them as we want to squeeze in the Kintbury Capers Wherigo cache. Quote

A couple of good pubs at Great Bledwyn too Down hill is better! Our intentions were to park up at Great Bedwyn and then catch the train to our start point at Thatcham. Having now been informed about the height diference we may well change our tact. Kintbury has a Wherigo cache which we want to squeze in so the pub may be an ideal resting point. Thanks also for the excellent advice. Quote
