+gpsblake
Garmin Legend HCx - you will also have to buy the Topo maps (around 100 bucks maybe slightly less) & the SD card. Quote Link to comment
+Miragee
I will also second the recommendation of the Legend HCx. It is selling for less than $200 now. You can get the older Topo maps on eBay for less money. Those are the ones I have on my Vista HCx. Quote Link to comment
TeamEcuador
Third. Good bang for the buck. Excellent sensitivity under adverse conditions, compact. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
Right now REI has the Vista HCX with topo maps included for around $250. You can get the Legend HCX for around $180 but you'll still need to shell out 60 bucks for topo maps, so the Vista HCX at REI is a pretty good deal. Quote Link to comment

+timcr810
What about the Venture HC? would this unit work for a beginner? I just started this addicting game a week ago and just bought this unit. So far so good. Quote Link to comment
+gpsblake
What about the Venture HC? would this unit work for a beginner? Absolutely. The only difference is the lack of an SD card reader and you'll save some money. The 24MB of memory for maps with the Venture HC (if you go that route) is more than enough for most people. 24MB will cover the entire state of South Carolina and parts of Georgia for mapping.
