Here's an interesting story about DC's newest benchmark,

set by the District of Columbia Association of Land Surveyors, at the urging of the local Highpointers Club.

Hah, 409 feet--That's one I might actually be able to make! Living in California means that my local highpoint is Mount Whitney, not something I'm likely to stroll up any time soon.

 

I knew that the highest point in Florida was less than 400 feet because I looked it up once. I think that's the lowest high point in any state. I wanted to check that, but was frustrated by the Highpointers' website. Sometimes a blog is not the most helpful format for a website. I never was able to find a list of all 51 high points.

Got you beat. I've been to High Point, NJ, Mount Greylock, Mass, and Mount Washington, NH. I think the AT goes over Bear Mountain, rather than Mount Frissell in CT. Oh, well.

It's not obvious (or wasn't to me), but the Highpointers' website has a list of the highest location in each of the 50 states — but, alas, not yet D.C. — which is accessible by clicking on the U.S. map on the homepage, or use this link.
