Looking for CHEAP starter GPS Unit for Geocaching w/ little brother

Recommended Posts

I was wanting to add that you should buy the best GPS unit you can afford as upgrading later isn't cheap! Likely, you'll need new cables, batteries etc when you upgrade and if you already bought all that for the first unit....plus, buying up every 6 months or so....OUCH!

You should always at least get one that will hook to the computer (download waypoints vs hand entering) and has good sat reception (the cheaper units generally don't have as good a reception as the mid or higher priced units...sirfIII, WAAS, number of sats it can lock etc). You'll figure all this out though when you decide to go on a numbers run and have to enter 30 or more coords by hand...or start looking under tree coverage and the unit constantly loses signal making the thing nothing more than a paperweight in your hand!

I made this mistake when we first started out....but I truly did buy what I could afford at the time (Garmin Yellow). Sure it was MUCH better than my old model (Magellan 315), we even thought we'd found modern tech.....until buying the Magellan 500LE....never lost signal, and I mean NEVER!!
