Doocc
I received a copy of the National Geographic Back Roads Explorer 3D for Christmas but have a Garmin eTrex Vista HCX gpsr. I dont have any maping software for my gpsr yet and am debating what I should do with the National Geographic software. Does anyone have/use this and what do you think? Is it worth holding onto this for mutzing on the computer or should I eat the postage and return it for the bulk of its cost and buy Garmin's topo or city navigator? Quote Link to comment
+smiley and The Miss
Ouch! No replies? I have the same software and am searhing for the same question to be answered. These forums are some of the best for that but I have found the "search" function to be less than specific. Perhaps I need to work on it but usually I find what I'm looking for here. Cheers for the New Year! -smiley Quote Link to comment
+smiley and The Miss
Read here from Yahoo Groups thread. http://tinyurl.com/yorgn2 As the NG series is only 1:100000, I am contemplating its return in favor of learning how to make my own. This process could be entertaining and engaging, but we'll see! http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm Cheers, -smiley Quote Link to comment
gratefulHIKE
I dont use topo maps at all while hiking......the only ones I ever grabbed were the national parks ones, I finally spent the extra few bucks on City Navigator which is worth it if you like to plan routes ahead of time and have turn by turns if not, then just go for metroguide, you can get it on ebay cheap....it requires no key just the cd, and you can install it on as many gpsr's as you want I would get rid of the cd, since it is not supported by your device http://ngmaps.arielmis.net/support/gps/ Quote Link to comment
+trainlove
It's a fun program to have. As a gift, I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. You should be able to upload & download waypoints, routes and tracks. But as you surmise you can't get those maps on your GPS. I'm not at my computer so I can't remember what format the wpt, rtw and trk files are for NG, but I think they were text. For Garmin use MapSourceTopo. For Magellan use MapSend Topo in the USA. For your computer use whatever you have, I like NG but recently got the 1:24k MapTech Terrain Navigator for New England & Nw York (16 CD's). Check my log for the Massachusetts Delorme Challenge for all the maps that I use. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=gcyjy1 Quote Link to comment
