New and found geocoin that is not activated.....

Can someone help me? I am really new and found my first geocoin over the weekend; however, the coin I picked up is not activated. If I try to activate it, it thinks I am the owner. What do I do?

If the coin was in a cache, it was likely left as swag. You should have traded fairly for the coin and then you can activate it...it's yours!

I am not sure it is a swag because it is a memorial coin. can you explain to me what swag is anyway? Sorry, still trying to catch on the the geo lingo.

Swag is the stuff you trade. On the cache page, previous cachers will note that they dropped an unactivated coin as a gift for a future cacher, but you should treat it as a swag item, since you get to keep it and activate it. Coins are worth $5-$10 and should be traded for equal stuff. You should also not post the tracking numbers of coins and travel bugs in your logs on the cache page. Someone else could activate your newly found coin, or discover it or move it virtually. There is a TB number associated with it that you can use from the coin's page. The activation code for your new coin can be found at www.coincodes.com. Hope that helps!

Swag is the stuff we trade in and out. Some generous folks leave unactivated coins. If it's a FTF prize you can just take it, but if it's 'swag' you should leave something worth what an unactivated coin is worth. That would range from about $5.00 for a micro to about $9.00 for a larger fatter coin. Just don't leave a McToy and you'll be fine!
