Thanks so much for the links! I too enjoyed all of the articles, with the one about the $250 fine being the most informative for me. I must admit that it brought a tear to my eye to see the box full of "destroyed" benchmark disks...

The really sad thing is that I get the sense there are boxes of disks all over the country that have not been logged to NGS as destroyed. It takes time, which busy professional don't have a lot of and can't put in the official budget. The office that has them may have a record, or at least remember for the time being that these are gone, but someone else working in the area may spend time looking for them.
