For in the woods caches. Follow GPS to ground zero and drop a colorful marker of some type then walk away 50 feet in any direction. this will mark the radius of your search area and keep you from going around in ever decreasing or increasing circles over the same places. Won't necessaarily help you find anything but keeps you from saying I've alreeady been here.

Lot's of good stuff here. Just in case I missed it, I'll through in a couple of things:

1) Water

2) First aid kit

3) Compass (and map if unfamiliar area) as back up

4) Fire starting gear

These along with other things mentioned (mirror - also for signaling, gloves, sunscreen, fold up thermal "blanket", whistle, spare socks etc) are in a butt pack I always have in my truck. My truck has a walking stick and a couple of style of hats as well. I've got additional water in the truck, towel and complete change of clothes inc boots if needed when I return to the vehicle.

I usually have my camera since I've been going to the woods for that for years.

Good hunting,

Jim
