+froldt Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 We went to place a cache today, and came back home with it still in our possession. We scouted the area a couple of times before (always in the dark) and found a decent place to put the cache. Today we applied the camo, got everything ready, and placed the cache. As we were sitting there, waiting for the GPSr to average it's location, Ducky was wandering around and found a 'better' spot to hide it, about 20 feet away. Of course, our container is just a hair too big, so we're now looking for a suitable container. Also, we have to change our camo completely. At least the cache contents will still work! Anyone else every done something like this? Quote
+Kit Fox Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 I carried an ammo can for over three miles one day, and I couldn't find a suitable spot (that I liked) to hide it. I only did that once. Quote
Treasure Pirate Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Yes, I have decided against hiding a particular cache in an area that I previously thought would be perfect. I am a believer that the location and hiding place, as well as the carefully thought out name is far for important to me than the actual container, nice camo job, or swag contained in the cache. I spotted a nice area on Google earth that was not saturated with caches, unlike other areas in my county, and had a nice cache container loaded and ready to go. When I got there to find the perfect spot for it--there were none that suited my imagination. I did find a few other nice places for caches that I had not yet designed, so I quickly went home to make up a few that did suit the environment. Now I always have at least 5 or 6 cache containers of various design and cammo with me, ready for the perfect hiding opportunity. There's no sense in ruining a perfect hiding opportunity with a less than perfect cache to suit the theme you have in mind. Quote
+Red 07Z Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 i recently hid a geocache that got muggled, i disabled it and went to rehide it, i was planning on changing it from a multi to a traditional... after placing it and going thought the process of resubmitting it, i changed my mind... i had a good new location and everything, but i decided to not finish.... soo a few weeks later, i just stopped by and took the container back home. right now i have one geocache that is currently active, it's really a good geocache that is definitively worth visiting and it's in a really enjoyable outdoor area thats hidden away from alot of locals... i figured once i can find a location that can beat that, then i'll consider hiding another one... but i just can't quite beat it! i would rather be known for a awesome geocache than for a few good geocaches Quote
+TexasGringo Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Yes...I went to place a cache and there were SWARMS of mosquitos there...just waiting. Geocaching is supposed to be fun...not torture. I moved the cache. Quote
+"we two want to play too" Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I placed two caches in Northern Michigan last fall. If you check my owned list, you'll see I only published one. Hubby and I agreed before placing our 1st cache that we would NOT place lame caches. I'm not particularly impressed with the hide of the one I did publish so, I required solving a puzzle in order to find it. The other was in a VERY cool spot of historical interest. I set out the camo taped container, set and rechecked coords. When I got back home, I just couldn't bring myself to publish it. The area was neat but, There was no good place to hide it well. Several months later I drove back up and pulled the container. Quote
Dinoprophet Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 (edited) I once hid an empty ammo can high in a fallen, dead tree to see if it would get plundered. When i came back a week later, not only was the can gone, but a homeless person's shanty had been set up right next to the tree. I didn't hide that cache. Edited March 29, 2007 by Dinoprophet Quote

Anyone else every done something like this? Actually, it would make me wonder if a cacher who has a lot of cache hides said that they never had an aborted mission like this one. There's no way to ever completely understand the variables of some locations unless you are willing to camp there for an extended period of time. We've got limited land space to work with in my area and luckily, we've been able to develop a culture where people put a lot into their hides and careful consideration is the norm with most hiders. I'm sure that I place a cache at less than 25% of the places that I give initial consideration to. My percentage is getting better now that I put together a cache scouting kit with a tape measure, depth and diameter gauges, a digital camera and a few other goodies. Quote

Anyone else every done something like this? I have never placed a cache but I am looking for a good spot. I was going to hide one right near my apartment complex on a trail that i can see from my deck (where i was going to place it is public property) but i decided it might make people look suspicious. Do you guys think i did the right thing by deciding against it??? Quote
Dinoprophet Posted April 13, 2007 Posted April 13, 2007 Another one I had was a big hollow tree. The perfect spot for a special hide I was going to do. But when I got close, I was overpowered by the musky stench of urea. It was inhabited, and I wasn't going to disturb the inhabitant (nothign major around here, but racoons and possums can be nasty). +SGT red jeep Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 I kept seeing a sign leading to fishing access site along a river near where I live. It is the only public access site on this river without a cache within 50 miles that I know of. I'd been to it once over 20 years ago and all I could remember about it was trees and a narrow boat ramp. So I took off with a well stocked cache ready to go. The access site was well marked but so were the fields on both sides. NO TRESPASSING. The road was deeply rutted and at one spot went through a farmers yard. Arriving at the actual public spot, I found it was less than 1/2 an acre. The boat ramp ended in a steep drop off to the river with no beach to speak of and the trees were sparce with not much ground cover. After looking around a little, I couldn't find a good hiding place for the ammo can where it wouldn't be muggled. Plus I just couldn't bring myself to make other cachers come to this spot. About a 50mi round trip wasted but at least I won't have to go back to fix a muggled cache. Quote
+TrailGators Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Nope because I study up beforehand and make sure the place is worthy of a cache and is not overcrowded with caches. Quote
+Sioneva Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 The Omaha, NE area is spiderwebbed with biking trails and running trails of both the paved and unpaved variety. I love exploring the trails, and wander off them frequently to see what's on either side. I never do this with the intent of "looking for a place to hide a cache", but sometimes I particular spot just catches my eye as perfect for a cache. Then I mark it, go home, and start putting the cache together, getting permissions, etc. Some people are walking "insta-cache" machines - they can whip up a cache out of what they carry in no time at all. My mind just doesn't work that way! Quote
