+Jedi Cacher
I am new to the world of Geocaching and just purchased my Vista last week. I have an older copy of Map Source Roads and Recreation and can't figure out how to unlock the 25 digit code. First off there was no 25 digit code inside the case. Also I am able to view the maps on my computer but cannot download them by region and can only download them by grids. Every time I put together a bunch of grids and attempt to download them, a message appears in a warning saying that I will lose all my basemap data. Is this normal when downloading mapping data? Since I am able to view the maps, maybe they are unlocked. Any help on this subject would be helpful to the newbie. Thanks!!!! Quote Link to comment
+Red90
I believe those maps are not locked. The basemap is not affected by uploading of detailed maps. What version of the Mapsource program are you running? It might be a good idea to update it (current is 6.12.2) Quote Link to comment

I just downloaded the update and it is allot more detailed with some newer additions. It will let me pick out a grids for my area but not regions. I was about to download to my GPS with the newer version and the message popped up again about losing my preloaded basemap data. I suppose I could take a chance and if it doesn't work I could always pick up the US Topo for my region. That might benefit me more for when I am hiking. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
You won't lose your basemaps when downloading new maps. You will lose the maps that you previously downloaded (if any). For instance if you dowloaded Topo maps, then later go to dowload Roads and Rec, it will write over Topo, or if you dowloaded Roads and Rec for Utah, then later dowloaded maps for Colorado, it will erase your Utah maps. The base maps will still be there though. Quote Link to comment
CenTexDodger
You may lose the "Preloaded Marine POI Database" that comes preloaded on some units. If you want it back you can go here and reload it. You will not (listen to us Garmin users, we know from where we speak) lose the basemap data. I am not sure what you are refering to by not uploading regions. Garmin divides their MapSource maps into segments, or tiles. You select the tiles you want, and send that selection to the unit. Now, your selection cannot be bigger than the capacity of the internal memory, and everytime you select maps and send to the unit, it will erase your previous upload. Quote Link to comment

Some map sets are broken up into regions - i.e., the old city select came in 6 or 8 regions. This way you could purchase just the region you were interested in, or the entire country. During the installation of the map sets to your computer you select which regions to install. To download all the tiles in a region to your GPS, you still have to select the tiles from Mapsource (assuming the unit memory was sufficient), you can't just select a region. I believe this is what the OP was referring to. Quote Link to comment

I had selected about 15 tiles and it will only use up about 3MB of memory if I decide to download it. For some reason the Roads and Rec will not load by region and I guess it is made that way. It would probably use up all the memory if it was done by region. I have 24MB of internal memory so I guess it will work just for my area. Quote Link to comment
