CacheMate problem

Recommended Posts

I read (saved to my favorites) Clan_Barron's article regarding using cachemate and GSAK for paperless caching. While it's still all a tad overwhelming I was able to load and convert caches to my Tungsten E.

I had to do them all one at a time as a pocket querie didn't list all the caches I wanted ... any suggestions on that one?

My main question/problem is this ... Whether I'm using title or waypoint, only the titles are listed. They get rearranged but it never lists them by waypoint. According to the article, I should be able to see both. Am I perhaps missing a step on cachemate or GSAK?

This is not a major problem, but it would be nice to have both options. Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

My memory is a bit hazy on this, but I seem to remember having the same difficulty when I first started using CacheMate. In my case, anyway, I had to change an option in CacheMate to be able to list the caches both by name and by waypoint. Here's how I solved the problem:

* In CacheMate, be sure you're in list mode (i.e., you see the list of caches and not a particular cache record).

* Open the menu, then under Option, select "List Options".

* In the List Options dialog, uncheck "Display waypoint as name" and "When sorted by waypoint".

* Click the OK button.

This resolved the problem for me; HTH!

I believe Larry had it backwards. If you want to be able to view the list by cache name OR by cache code, you need to CHECK the boxes for "Display waypoint as name" and "When sorted by waypoint". That way when you have the "Name" box (lower right corner on list view) highlighted you get the list by name; when the "Wpt" is highlighted you get the list by code (actually you get a list sorted by code whether or not the code is displayed, that's why there is a change in list order).

I recommend GSAK. You can load PQs then sort/filter to just the ones you want, then export those to CacheMate.

Actually, both methods will work. Which you select will likely depend on what you choose in the "Extra info" drop-down box. I prefer to always display Waypoint; I'm betting The Jester prefers Difficulty/Terrain.

If you follow The Jester's approach, you will indeed get lists sorted by name and by waypoint, depending on the choice you make in the lower right-hand corner.

Using The Jester's method, with Terrain/Difficulty selected from the "Extra Info" drop-down list, you get:

Sorted by name: Name followed by Terrain/Difficulty in parentheses

Sorted by waypoint: Waypoint followed by Terrain/Difficulty in parentheses

If you use the method I suggested, and select Waypoint from the "Extra Info" drop-down list, you get:

Sorted by name: Name followed by waypoint in parentheses

Sorted by waypoint: Waypoint in parentheses followed by name

I need the name and waypoint ID more than I need the Difficulty/Terrain rating to be displayed.

Both methods will work, it's a matter of preference and what you want to see in the list.

BTW, I also use GSAK to maintain my cache listings and transfer them to the GPSr. Wouldn't do it any other way!

Dear Larry & Jester,

You guys ROCK!!! THANK YOU!!! The Cachemate problem is solved. I just need more practice with PQ's, GSAK, and cachemate! Heading out in the morning on my first "all paperless" hunt! Thanks again and Happy Labor Day!! :)

Coach88,

Thanks! If it works in the field as well as it looks at home, I'll be paperless from now on! B)

It's all about the journey and the friends you make along the way!

Well GeoBeav & Kilikina, I've just gone paperless about a month ago and I see why you're excited... I also have some cachemate issues I need to resolve but so far I would never go back. GSAK + PQ + Cachemate = one happy cacher :)

Cheers & play safe!

Larry, The Jester, and Coach88,

Went on my first all paperless cache yesterday and went 21 for 21 with no DNF's!!! My PB to date!

I still carried a print out of the cache locations so I had a general idea of their location to each other.

Just wanted to say "THANKS" once again for all of your prompt and friendly assistance! :tired:

Best Regards,

You must have been reading my mind, as I have been sitting here wondering how to use GSAK and CacheMate "after" the find! I knew there had to be a way to post the finds and the logs in the same great way to load them. Will check this out and will send another SOS message if I expereience a DNF!! :tired:

Glad to help, and congrats on going paperless!

I hope you've checked out the File=>Load CacheMate logs and finds, and the semi-auto logging that GSAK does...

GeoBeav&Kilikina,

Glad to see that you enjoyed your paperless transition. I've checked out some links on loading cachemate logs in GSAK before but I can't quite figure it out. I'm still working on it and I'm sure if one of us don't figure out soon enough, The Jester might walk us through it :) I'll let you know If i figure it out.

I don't get it... when I run cm2gpx utility, I get a glimpse of a window for a fraction of a second and then its gone. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing. The DOS window will only be open briefly, as cm2gpx doesn't take very long to run. When you set up the cm2gpx command you told it what file to create & where. That file is used in the Load CacheMate command.

The only problem is if cm2gpx has an error message - that goes away also. I'm assuming you are running this from a batch (.BAT) file. If you add a line "pause" (without quotes) to the end of the batch file, the window won't go away until you hit a key (good thing to do while testing this).

I just down loaded cache mate and when I export from GSAK it only seems to export one file. What could I have done wrong.

If you mean one .PDB file, that's right. All the caches in the current grid in GSAK will be in one .PDB file. Load this into the install program, hotsync, and open CacheMate. It should then ask you where to load that file.

Actually I solved my problem. I found the answer answer on the GSAK support page. One box was blanked out. When I enetered the correct tag everything worked fine. Thanks
