  1. First experience with Openstreetmaps... I'll play around with that for a bit. thanks
  2. I found my CD's for TOPO Canada but there's a twist... only 3 of 4 CD's. I'm installing now, I guess i'll find out soon enough if it'll work. My main interest is Maps that I can load onto my Garmin 60CX and use them as I did my TOPO Canada. Street maps and not an absolute since I can route cities not problems with my phone. They're still nice to load on a GPS if you're in the woods and don't require the clutter of elevation lines... any suggestions is appreciated :-)
  3. My Bad for not using the proper terminology... I realized that once Mapsource was installed but I still had to get the Maps in there. In my world, I saw the whole thing as Mapsource since that's how it was packaged when I bought it a number of years (and PC's/Laptops/OS's ago). I'll do some digging around the house and i'm sure i'll come upon my TOPO Canada Maps. TOPO USA... they could be harder to find but I can do without. Thanks for trying anyway :-)
  4. As previously stated, when I try to install my map products (CanadaTOPO and US Topo) I keep getting an error message that it can't find a "source file". It specifies the path where it should be and when I look, it's there. Why can't it find it?
  5. Progress report... I installed basecamp from the Garmin Webpage. Then I was able to install Mapsource using the link provided by ecanderson. Now, i'll try to get my maps in there somehow
  6. Here's what I did... I copied the 4 lines as suggested, saved it as a .reg file. I opened the registry editor (regedit) and clicked file, import and selected the file I just created. At first it gave me a message about restoring the key on top of key "Computer" and replacing everything under it... yikes! so I created one that was named Garmin and tried to import it. I got the following error message: "Cannot import C:\Users\***.reg the specified file is not a registry file. You can only import a registry file."
  7. Not sure if this would make a difference or not... The files that I have are on my external drive. Should I copy them somewhere on the Hard drive before running setup?
  8. The installation didn't pick up on the previous one :-( As I mentioned before, when I run the setup file, it hits a wall when it looks for specific files. I do have a file named "Disk 1". Is it possible that it's looking for files in that folder? If so, how can I get it to look there? it doesn't give me a browse option. I seem to recall it working the last time I updated my PC by running the setup file from a specific folder or somewhere...
  9. Thanks, I'll give it a shot and let you know what worked for me...
  10. I recently re-installed Windows 8 on my Laptop. Before doing so, I backed up my garmin files. Seeing I had the setup.exe file in one of the folders, I thought I was ok. I could dig around to find my CD's but they could be anywhere. I think I installed before without them but this time, it's telling me it can't find certain files. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. If you need more info... ask away :-)
  11. Funny you mention the Oregon... He mentioned he'd like a newer more powerfull GPS. I'll mention it to him...
  12. I think I've got it A bit of work and sorting out to go through but it should work. I managed to load 1 individual Track log that I renamed. Thanks everyone for your input!
  13. Allow me to clarify as I seem to have confused some... My 72 year old, non tech savvy Uncle has no computer. He relies on me to help him out with his GPS. He sorta made a mess of tracks since he doesn't really understand the concept of turning his track log on and off. Soooo.... he has a bunch of random small snowmobile and Atv trails within his track log. I cleared his GPS, uploaded his data to Mapsource and cleaned it up a bit. My question was: Is there a way to save all or most of these bits and pieces of tracks as one. The answer I get is: Yes but by joining all of them together.... therefore creating another mess of random straight lines. Now... I noticed that I can rename the track logs. Once I rename the track logs, is it possible to upload them individually to the GPSr. In other words, I could pick which ones I would upload and leave the others on the PC for upload at a later date. Thanks for your input and feel free to ask any clarifying questions
  14. When I join each track, I get the same problem where it connects the last point and the first point from the next one...
  15. As a follow up... even if I could pick and choose which Active tracklogs I could upload to the GPS, that would be appreciated too!
  16. My uncle who relies on me for his GPS problems showed up today. He has a Garmin eTrex Venture HC. His 20 tracks are filled up but when I downloaded the info to my PC he also had 113 Active Logs. I deleted the saved tracks since it seemed that they were all interconnected. I've seen this on my 60CX when you don't turn you track log off, then turn off the GPS. When you turn it on again, seems the track log connects the last point with the next and you end up with a straight line between the two points. Is there a way that I can save those Active logs as 1 track and load them on his GPSr for him. When I send the info to the GPS, some of the tracks appear on the Map and the message that the tracks are full appears. It looks like it loads the max 20 tracks. The track log shows 70% full. Any help is appreciated!
  17. I managed to burn a copy from my backup on the HD. Disk 1 works fine but when I get to the part for insert disk 2, it doesn'r recognize the files (Data 2 & Data11) that i had on the HD labled Disk 2. Is there something missing? should I unzip them first before burning them to the disk? They're RAR files... any help is appreciated!
  18. Thanks Coggins now do you or anyone else know of a way I can re-install my other mapsets without inserting the CDs? I have all the image files and the likes in their original folders that I backed up prior to upgrading to Win7. But when I click on the setup files, it always asks for me to insert "disk1" wich i can't find. US Topo setup fine directly from a folder. I think i recall someone at Garmin helping me with that a few years back and luckily enough for me, it worked today. Unfortunately it doesn't work for North American MetroGuide...
  19. Similar situation, different details... I'm trying to re-install NAMetroGuide on my Windows 7 machine. I have the setup.exe file and all the rest on the HD. When i attempt to Run Setup, it starts fine but then it prompts me to insert the CD. Is there a way i can "tell" the computer to look in the folder on the HD?
  20. Reinstall worked and I also downloaded from gpsfiledepot! I should be ok now! Thanks for your input! I assume it's normal that I don't have turn by turn routing on the gpsfiledepot map but It doesn't work with Garmin's US Topo either... is this normal? When i switch to Canada topo it works fine...
  21. Thanks for pointing me to GPSfileDepot. I downloaded and installed NewEngland TopoMaps and it works fine. I tried to setup a route and it doesn't do Turn by Turn. Am I doing something wrong or is this feature not available? Also, I found my file with my actual copies of the US topo software and not just the Image files. I didn't think I could install without the disks but it did work. Thanks to all who replied and hopefully I'll be able to help solve one of your problems in the future!
  22. Thanks for helping out but my problem isn't on the unit, it's on my PC. When I select various products (US topo, Metroguide)it doesn't load the map details. I have all the map info (image files) on my laptop but I can't seem to install them.
  23. Since i'm in Canada, it's been a while since i used US TOPO. I'm heading to Maine tomorow and when i select US TOPO it looks more like the BaseMap. I have details set to highest. Since i last used US TOPO. I've upgraded to Windows 7 and reinstalled Mapsource and updated to the lasted version. I don't think i installed US Topo since then but i find it strange that it's available in the different maps selections. Also, my other map sets such as metro guide appear there but don't seem to work either except for Canada Topo. I have all my disk info on my computer, my disks are somewhere at home and I'm at the campground. Are there any steps i can take to have the US info on my mapsource? Thanks!
