Accurate Topographical Map Sites

Recommended Posts

Topozone is the only website that seems to match LostOutdoors for accuracy, but they don't have photos and you can't choose your print scale with them. From the caches that I test sites with, ALL the others mentioned (this thread and others) are OK for approximating, but not getting a spot exact.

A couple of downloadable programs that seem to do OK for accuracy are USAPhotoMaps and ExpertGPS. ExpertGPS is shareware that can be tried free for a month. I really liked their export feature and small marks, but it costs more than I want to pay for this hobby. USAPhotoMaps's export feature is a pain and it won't export the waypoints (you have to manually mark the printed map), but the price can be right.

Give USAPhotoMap a try.. available at: http://www.jdmcox.com

It's a small download.. then you "fill" only the areas you want.

Its source is from terraserver & it keeps the areas you fill on your computer for instant access. At the 4 meter per pixel scale it seamlessly swaps to topo or back to photo. Accepts inputs in D/M/S , DD/MM.MMM , UTM & others.

You can plot waypoints, measure, zoom in to 1 meter per pixel.

Well worth a looksee & its a freebee.
