+chstress53
Scored 10 caches along the way. ( 6 traditionals & 4 virtuals) Received our certificate for completion of the second annual LI Lighthouse Challenge, visited 11 lights and one Lightship. Currently busy creating waymarks that we found: 3 lighthouses, 5 wineries, 6 gnormous objects ( one a giant bull), 3 Ferry terminals , 1 Civil war monument , 5 windmills & one waymark for a song lyric of Billy Joels Oyster Bay, all ready to go. Several others may fit other categories I need to check though, if not maybe a new Category. Dropped off two travel bugs and picked up one TB that has a mission to go to a cache in Washington's Crossing NJ. ( We will be able to have him complete his mission in a week or so) Won the door prize of a replica Lighthouse at the kick off dinner on Friday night. Spent Sat evening, after a full day of visiting lights and wineries in a hot tub. All in all we had a blast. Even scored one of the virtuals by boat as it was the only way to see some of the lights. Rode three different Ferry Boats and one pleasure boat, meet a lot of good people and even some of the Lighthouse volunteers we were happy to discover were cachers. Thanks for all the help. +chstress53
The Nantucket Lightship's Temporary Location: Oyster Bay Waterfront Center. I soon will be creating a waymark for it but have not had time to create them at the moment. Description: 148 feet in length, two masts, red hull, with "Nantucket" in white. History of lightship 1934: Nantucket Lightship (LV 117) is sunk by the liner Olympic. British government offers to pay for replacement, as reparations. 1936: LV 112 is launched, and put on station at Nantucket Shoals, where she spent nearly all her service. 1942-1954: Served as an examination vessel during the war. 1958-1960: Served as a relief vessel. 1975: Decommissioned. Current use: Under restoration. The surrounding area: Oyster Bay is an old Long Island port. Cold Spring Harbor, including the Whaling Museum, is nearby. Public access? Can be seen from dock. Other information: Largest lightship ever built in United States. Quote Link to comment
