Why Would You Want This Option?

Recommended Posts

The other day while happily editing a few of my Waymarks, I stumbled into one that when I went to update it I was informed that I now MUST choose a DEFAULT BACKGROUND IMAGE.

So, I did... and the picture I chose was shoved at the top of the description, shifted over to the extreme left and honestly, made the page look ugly.

I can understand having people include an Image into the Waymark page... Libraries does this, and it works great. But Libraries has the Owner do it themselves through HTML coding, and even shows you how if you don't know. (which I didn't... thanks to whomever)

Now, I don't want to say which Category forced me to do this... but to me, the option to force as a default background image is rather unappealing.

I dunno... I'd rather be told something like

'You must use <center><img src="mywaymarkimage.jpg" width="640" height="480"></center> on the page'

than

Shove an image into the top left corner that has little artistic flair.

Any one else encountered this feature when posting a Waymark?

Yes I have encountered it and it is more problems than anything. Especially if you are like me and you do edits on the page. It forces you to upload a picture again. To get around it I upload it again, paste in the html on how I really want the page to look, then go to the gallery and remove the default picture check mark and usually end up deleting the picture too as it is duplicated. I have found this in only one category. I won't put it in any of mine.

yes, well it is a nice option. i did not see what happened, as i wanted the pic on the page...and it does help to keep the page size in check--not having to scroll left for the things located there....now, if they could fix the sizes on profiles.

since adding a picture to the description is a good option, there should be an option to make it an option or a requirement. it would depend on the category. and it helps those that do not know how to insert the pic to the page.

This feature has been added because of the following reasons:

  • Many people already have been requiring waymarkers in their category to post photos. We are fine with this requirement, but feel it is too much to ask to require html use in order to accomplish this, so we've provided an easier way.
  • We want to force the pictures to fit within the context of the page. Many people are putting HUGE pictures up that don't fit within the defined page area.
  • We want to create somewhat of a standard for displayed waymark photos.

I'm sorry you don't like the way the picture is displayed. This is certainly subject to change in the future.

And to answer BruceS's post, there was an error related to this control that has now been fixed. Should be functioning correctly now.

It's an okay feature... I'm getting used to it. And it has uses.

The reasons you gave make perfect sense... it just caught me off guard when I tried to update my (not gonna give it away) Waymark.

Maybe if it was put in the center, or something beside it instead of blank space...

But you were right to do it... and it is far easier for those of us HTML challenged people (I know maybe 8 codes)

Can we add more than one photo?

I second this request. I started out requiring two photos on the page for the Oregon Markers category but have backed off to one to use this feature and make things easier for waymarkers. I changed my requirement so as to not have to mix and match the two "picture on the page" methods. I would still like the two photos on the page to bring the waymark submissions to life.

An optional second picture variable would be great.
