+Jake39
Is it 'ART' or just graffiti? There are many sanctioned displays and murals on the side of railroad cars -fences- tunnels and various places that are artistically designed. Link to comment
+ChapterhouseInc
graffiti is a 'on the fence' form of art. i would say that the graffiti posted above would be classified as art, as it has artistic qualities, but if it is just spraying the gang sign, that is not art. around Athens, we have the SUR13 and Los Primos gangs. this is graffiti, not art. we have no 'graffiti artists' here, unlike NY (for example). how would you waymark the 'el train' though? it is not stationary. and when would the graffiti cross over into being a mural? and according to documentary on graffiti (it is a criterion dvd, can't think of name), are they not temporary? like i paint this section of whatever, and it could stay for ever, or it could be painted over next week (a territorial thing?). +ha'oqev
How would one screen what you call "sanctioned" (i.e. approved) art projects and vandalism? I would not like to see one of the Groundspeak groups giving attention to crimes or misdemeanors. Link to comment
+ChapterhouseInc
it is not the legality of the object in question--it is the artistic qualities. if governments would learn to sanction graffiti, and thus somewhat control/guide it, the world could be a more appealing place to live in. As a fine arts graduate and artist myself I am as open minded about artistic expression as anyone. However it is not really the artistic value that I am concerned with, as I know much graffiti is quite skillfully executed. It is the fact that in most part the act of graffiti is at the core vandilization. I know some have the attitude that it is their free speech right to do this to other's property for whatever reason (sticking it to "the man" etc.) But just as you or I wouldn't appreciate somebody taking artistic license on our own personal vehicle, home etc we shouldn't condone it being done to commercial or governmental property.
