Using Html In A Cache Listing

I'm a complete moron when it comes to HTML. I'm about to submit a cache listing, but I'd like to have a link to one of my bookmarks in the listing. I think I might be able to manage this, but I'd still appreciate a little how-to.

 

The other problem I have is that whenever I try to put a link via HTML coding in a cache description, all of the other text spacing and line breaks are screwed up. How do I prevent this?

You can ad a link without HTML, however if you choose HTML then the entire cache page needs to be in the same format.

 

I'm not a HTML expert so I may be wrong. You can contact Geoworm, he's my webmaster for Today's Cacher and a whiz at this stuff.

Just remember to put <P> before every paragraph and </P> after every paragraph and check the box that states the listing is in HTML and it should look okay.

 

If you just need a line break, and not a space between paragraphs, use <BR>.

How? Will it show up as www.blahblahblah... or can I name it something like when I post links in the forums? Does the same thing work in profiles?

For a link you need to use the HTML which would be

 

<a href=http://www.websiteaddressoflink>Link Name</a>

if u have an html editor like Frontpage or Dreamweaver you can use that and just choose to view html and and then copy and paste the script. if you need any help with html just email me

For the cache pages, it is better to just use the simple codes without using a program like Frontpage that adds extraneous codes.

 

Remember to keep the pages as simple as possible since many people are viewing the pages on their Palms or Pocket PCs.

Do not feel stupid. Save that feeling for 5 DNFs on a 1/1 micro cache.

 

Do you want your image in the middle part, with the words (if so, miragee has listed the code for that) or a background image?

 

If in the middle part of the page, perhaps you are having a problem with uploading the file, then getting the url? That is simple, you can upload an image on your cache page. Then click on it, copy the url from your address bar in your browser. Now, use miragee's code up there and add paste the url, but don't forget the ' '.

 

If in the background, there's a special place near the top of the edit page where you can put the url.

 

Read Bon's again. It may take a couple of reads to let it all sink in.

No need to feel stupid... here are some step-by-step instructions:

If you want the image to appear in your cache description:

• if the image exists on your computer:
  • First, you have to upload it. (You could send it it someplace like photobucket or imageshack, or to a web site of your own. These instructions will send it to your cache page.)
    
  • On your cache page, click "upload images" in the upper-right corner.
    
  • Click the "Browse" button and navigate to the location of the image on your computer.
    
  • Type in a name for "File Caption".
    
  • Click the "Upload" button.
    
  • The image won't appear on your cache page immediately. On your cache page, click "edit listing". Go down to the bottom, click the two "Yes, I have read..." checkboxes, and click the "Edit Listing" button.
    
  • Click the "view listing" link to see your cache page. Right before "Logged Visits", there will be a link to the image that you just uploaded. Click on it. A new window will open containing just the image. Click on the the URL and use CTRL-C to copy the URL to your clipboard. Close the new image window.
    
  • On your cache page, click "edit listing" again. Check the box that says "The descriptions below are in HTML". Go to the "Long Description" box. Figure out where in the text you'd like to insert your image.
    
  • Insert this text: <img src="use ctrl-v to paste the URL here">
    Go down to the bottom, click the two "Yes, I have read..." checkboxes, and click the "Edit Listing" button.
    
  • Click the "view listing" link to see your cache page. The image should be displayed in your cache description.
    

  [*]if the image isn't on your computer, but exists on a web site somewhere:

  • Skip the uploading step described above. Instead, go to the web page and get the URL of the exisiting image; copy it to your clipboard and edit your page as described above. (Note: you can't always rely on other web pages to stay the same, so your link might eventually break if you do it this way.)
    

If you want the image to be the background for your cache page:

• if the image exists on your computer, upload it to your page and copy the URL as described above; if it's on another webpage, just copy the URL.
  
• On your cache page, click "edit listing". Find the box for "Background image URL", and paste your clipboard text there. Go down to the bottom, click the two "Yes, I have read..." checkboxes, and click the "Edit Listing" button.
  
• Click the "view listing" link to see your cache page. The page should now have your background image.

You can find an excellent HTML Primer here. I printed out each section and refer back to it on a regular basis. If you have an existing cache you can use it to practice on. Start with simple changes like bolding text, changing text color and size, etc. right up to adding links, photos, and other goodies to dress-up the page.
