sitzman
Howdy, I was wondering if anyone has discovered a website to convert from coordinates into ones nearest address? (ie, sites like mapquest will show you a pin-point of where your gps coordinates are on a map, but Id like it to give me a street address etc) Quote Link to comment
+Team Shibby
Hey Sitzman, We were just discussing a similar topic here. You will find a few links there as well. TEAM SHIBBY!!!! Krs, Kar & Na [This message was edited by Team Shibby on May 02, 2003 at 06:52 PM.] Quote Link to comment
sitzman
Hi Shibby, Thanks for the reply, but I think you may have misunderstood what I want to do.. I want to convert FROM gps coordinates into an address; The thread you pointed me to discusses converting an address INTO gps coords.. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
+Team Shibby
My bad...I tried to make it up to you with searching the web for over an hour, but I havent had any success. I have found a million different coordinate converters, but none that reverse the search. I even tried it in my copy of City Select from Mapsource and it just gives you and overview but not the exact location. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for you cause now I am equally interested. +Team Shibby
I did find an article here that calls it "Reverse Geocoding" and it states that with MapPoint 2002 this can be done. I just so happen to have MS MapPoint 2002, so I'll give it a try and let you know. Kar TEAM SHIBBY!!!! Krs, Kar & Na Quote Link to comment
sitzman
Hi Shibby! Thanks for all the help! I'm my fingers crossed Quote Link to comment
sitzman
Actually, what I really need to find now is a web-based program that will do it for free But Shibby, you rule -- you found the magic google keywords! Quote Link to comment
+RedHat39
Umm, how about entering the Lat/Long coords into your GPS and then use its map to see what the closest road is? As far as I know there are no free/pay websites or programs to buy that turn coordinates into an address. Like Shibby I'ved used Map Point and Delorme SA to locate a cache on a real map. Both programs will even figure out driving directions for you to get as close as possible too. I was born in the dark, but it wasn't last night..." Quote Link to comment
sitzman
Redhat, thanks for the reply Your recommendation would normally work, but not for what I want to do. So I guess here is the explanation of what I am planning. I have a Treo300 phone (wireless web) and want to be able to get driving directions to say -- Denny's. However, often I do not know my street address as I am driving around. So, it would be nice to get driving directions from my lat/long to a street address. However, no such program exists. So, if I could roughly convert the coordinated to an address then I could run it through mapquest etc. Manually zooming in on a map to guestimate where I am based on pinpoints/a marker of the coordinates would be both an extra step as well as very slow given that I would have to download the image to my phone. Thanks! Quote Link to comment

+Jamie Z
Rand McNally dot com has an option to get directions to or from coordinates, although I can't seem to get it to work. Maybe it'll be fixed in the future. Weird, since I just posted about this maybe four days ago. Jamie Quote Link to comment

sitzman
Jamie -- Thanks!!! That will work perfectly! I will play with it later in the week and let you know what results I can get Awesome!! Quote Link to comment
+Markwell
That's the coolest innovation since Mapblast removed their coordinates. It used to be that Mapblast used the same service to do driving directions to and from coordinates. They removed it sometime about a year ago. Now Rand McNally has the feature. Cool. OK - someone crack a URL code so we can direct feed it without keying in the lat/lon to their form. Markwell Chicago Geocaching Quote Link to comment
