jimmyreno
I live in Reno and plan to take a number of trips in every direction this year. What are some of the best caches to visit within 400 miles? By best, I mean, Great view of the surrounding terrain, not a micro, within 5 miles of the main road and less than an hour from the pavement to the cache. Also, not in a large urban area like Sacramento. To start things off, here are some good Reno caches to check out when you come here. From the west, Kitty litter, gcd526, take Robb st exit, north to new parkway, west to Mae Anne, south to LaSalle From the north, GBES Geocachers Reno Travel Bug Port, gc96b7 From 395, Dandini & Raggio to DRI parking lot . From the East, Street Vibrations Riverwalk gsea60, Follow Larkin to where it's closest to the Truckee river hike and bike trail From the South, Reno High Roller gc85db A nice urban park with a trail up to a hilltop, Take Huffaker lane east to Huffaker park. +sammydee
I was just up there last weekend and really enjoyed Deadmans Creek Trail Cache near Washoe Lake: Deadmans Creek Trail Cache About 1 mile round trip from the trailhead. Nice view of the lake and mountains. When we did it there were budding green trees at the bottom and lots of snow at the top. Quote Link to comment
jimmyreno
I've created a Bookmark list of favorites, more good caches in the Reno area are listed there. Shows how you can use Bookmark's to show the caches you like in your area. Quote Link to comment
Sgt Stitches
There are lots of great ones around Tahoe... but one that fits your requirments: 95 feet under (Near Donner Lake) Quote Link to comment
jimmyreno
There are several good caches in the Topaz lake area just north of the Ca border Quote Link to comment
Archaeologist-PA
I just returned from visiting family in Reno. One of the caches we did was Echoes of the V&T Railroad (GCJXF9) in Virginia City. We made it a little harder by hiking in from the road. Great views, and history! Driving up the windy road to Virginia City was an adventure in itself. Quote Link to comment
RockyRaab
The "Launch Pad" series of TB drops along I-80 stretch eastbound almost as far as Wells. And there are a decent number of interesting caches (some micros, but fun) in Elko. I make the Salt Lake to Reno run three times a year (for the Big Reno Gun Show) and seldom fail to hit a new cache or two along the way to break up driving fatigue. Quote Link to comment
rusty_tlc
The Rattlesnake Mountian area is booming. This is part of the Hufaker Hills Park. Park by the water tank and hike to the six caches that surround it. You can use 52 card pick up as a central search point. Quote Link to comment
jimmyreno
I just did a trip from Reno south on 395, I placed 3 new caches at locations with great views and close to the road. South facing locations so they melt out quickly after a snow storm. Here's one I posted at the other caching site, you need to be logged in to see it. About 75 miles south of Reno http://www.terracaching.com/viewcache.cgi?C=TCRP Quote Link to comment

jimmyreno
you can send an e-mail to me Hi The idea is that when someone knows of a good cache on a road to Reno they POST it on this thread. This way everyone can learn. : Quote Link to comment
4wheeler
My favorite on the road to Reno is along I-80 between Truckee and Reno. It is GC3818, I-80 Flume Cache. At first it looks like a quick park and find BUT things aren't what the seem. I first found it during the winter with a cold stiff wind blowing down the canyon which added a big thrill to the search. +jimmyreno
I went west on I-80 and one cache I really liked was Coin Drop: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...59-531267705e3e Close to a freeway exit, a nice shady, serene walk along an irrigation canal, no poison oak because of the wide trail/road. And a neat container. Thx to everyone for their suggestions Quote Link to comment
4wheeler
Add another must do. It is "Transcontinental Transportation History". It is located at the summit of the old road at Donner Summit just off I-80 near another good one "95 Feet Under". It is located along the old Transcontinental Railroad right of way that can be seen going along the south side of Donner Lake. Edited July 14, 2005 by 4wheeler Quote Link to comment
jimmyreno
Last weekend I did a bunch of caches around Donner summit, none really had much of a view. Then coming back to Reno I stopped at Boca townsite: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...fa-930f9df1614a An odd place, there's a parking lot with a public restroom and apparently nothing else. But if you look closer, you'll see a thin asphalt trail winding up the hillside with history lessons on signs and at the end a cache with a nice view. It has 244 logged visits, so there are some people who know about it. Edited August 4, 2005 by jimmyreno Quote Link to comment
jimmyreno
Not far from Boca cache is another with a great view, Fire Fighter Tribute By Doodad Take the Hirshdale exit Quote Link to comment
jimmyreno
Today I did the FLUME RIDER cache 7 miles west of Reno, you walk along the Truckee river. Great scenery. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...f9-2552e26c0b28 Quote Link to comment
jimmyreno
East of Reno there is an interesting cache at Soda lake, even if you don't go there the write up on the cache page is interesting. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...5b-62137b29d033 Quote Link to comment
