Placing Caches

Hi,

I realize that I can't place a cache in a place owned by the US Fish and Wildlife...but can I put one in a National Audubon sanctuary if it doesn't require bushwacking?

We have an Audubon Sanctuary nearby with a most remarkable historical landmark that would make a great spot for a multi-cache if it is allowed.

Thanks,

Follow the advice here and check. Many actively encourage geocaching, however, I see you are in CT, and I know of one in CT that has specifically banned geocaching.

There are several caches in Audubon preserves in my area (and lovely spots they are, too). On a couple of those, the hider explicitly mentions that the park manager is aware of the hide and is keeping an eye on it.

I'd ask. It's private land, for one thing. And for another, it is so worth making a good impression on Audubon folks. They've got so many fabulous preserves for us to play in.

(In the logs for one of the fussier local Audubon sites -- the kind where you pay an admission fee and stick religiously to the trail -- a cacher posted how much fun it was to do at night. Ach! Not the way to make a park manager happy).

Good thing about Audubon, though...they'll have lots of web resources and contact names. I don't know about you, but I'm more comfortable explaining something like geocaching by email. And there's bound to be a specific email address or contact person for the park you're thinking of.

The first cache I placed was on Audubon property with permission: Spring Creek Nature Cache

They were wonderful about it. They were very exicited to have a cache and helped me place it in an area that would require some walking without trampling anything they were concerned about. For everytime I thanked them for letting me put a cache there, they also thanked me for placing one. They liked that the cache would bring some more visitors to their area and just generally liked the idea of caching as a whole. Overall, my experience with them was great. I suggest contacting the chapter that owns the land for permission. Audubon properties are privately owned, so you will definitely need permission. Tell them about caching and stress that you will welcome their help in placing the cache in a way that won't worry them and promise to properly maintain it. Feel free to use mine as a reference if you like.

Audubon areas tend to be quite nice places for caches, so I think it is well worth pursuing! :anitongue:

I ran into that with mine. There is no fee to enter where my cache is, but it does have limited hours and once some cachers did it at night. A few other times, some parked outside the gate on an off day and found it. Fortunately the Audubon people didn't get freaked by that. One time some cachers showed up when it was closed but a staff member was there. He happily let them look anyway. Still, I was upset that I placed the hours on the page and mentioned signing in at the visitor center and some people broke that. I was prepared to have to make major apologies to Audubon and maybe be asked to remove the cache, but fortunately that didn't happen. I wouldn't have blamed them if they had gotten mad though! :anitongue:

I'm not usually one for deleting legit found it logs, but I would put something on the page saying "no logs will be accepted for finds outside posted hours"..

Don't assume because of the above posts that it is automatically okay to place a cache in a preserve. The one around here does not allow it because of the fear that folks might go in at night I've been told. A prominent local even works there, so they do know all about it.

There is a cool one at the entrance instead.
