+junglehair
Com1 is your first serial port. Be sure that you are plugging it into the same serial port as you were before, otherwise you will need to adjust your settings to Com2 (or whatever). Unfortunately, I don't know much about the GPSMAP 76S, and have never used GSAK (been meaning to try it). There are a few things I would though. Make sure your GPS Interface is set to the Garmin mode. I switched my Legend over to NMEA mode one day to connect it with Streets & Trips, then discovered I had to switch it back before I could download waypoints. If you have EasyGPS, you could try troubleshooting with that. Under File/Preferences, click Add GPS and select the Garmin/GPSMAP 76S. Make sure it is hooked up to the computer and turned on, and select GPS/Test Serial Connection... It will tell you that it's checking to see if the port you are using is being used by another device. click OK If you don't get an error, then you've got the right port (or at least one that's not used). It will then try to identify your GPS. Click OK. If it comes back with information about the GPS, then everything is working fine (and your issue would be with GSAK). If it gives you an error, then the problem is with the GPS/Connection to the PC. Try changing the settings to Com2 and repeat the steps above... see if that helps. Sorry I can't be more help, but those are some of the steps I would try. Someone else here might be familiar with that particular error message from GSAK and be able to give you a better answer. Good luck! Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
Still doesn't work for me. I even rebooted my computer. Does anyone else have any suggestions. Jim Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
It has to be something wrong with my Garmin MAPMAP 76S, because I can send waypoints to my Palm OK, with GSAK, just can't send anything to my hanheld gps. Need help!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
+rayjimmy
I had a similar experience and it was my PDA Hotsync still had control of the port. If I right click on my Hotsync icon, it allows me to choose exit and then I am able to download to my GPS. There is a thread related to PDAs that mentions this, however, I can never seem to find these things easily. Hope this helps. Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
That didn't work either!! Quote Link to comment
+Olar
Did you by any chance activate the USB connectivity feature in GSAK accidentally? Olar Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
I really don't know if I did. If I did by chance, where do I go to undo it? Quote Link to comment
+fivegallon
I really don't know if I did. If I did by chance, where do I go to undo it? GPS Setup Under "GPS brand" there is "Enable USB support" and a checkbox Quote Link to comment

Am I looking in the wrong place? Maybe you have an earlier version? On mine: Click on GPS Click on Setup This brings up a dialog box - GPS Setup The box contains the following: GPS Brand Enable USB Support Communications port Port Speed Maximum waypoints for GPS Make sure you connect... +Upstate NY Geocacher
I'll try that. If I ever get to send waypoints to my GPS, I will let you know, so people won't have to send me any more suggestions. Thanks for the help so far! Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
USB support in GSAK is available only to those that registered GSAK and downloaded the preview. It's not in the mainstream release. Explain what "a serial port not a Com port" means to you. Access denied sounds like a problem with the exclusive open, such as something else (hotsync PDA programs, other mapping programs, modem programs, whatever) having that serial port open. Your statement " I can send waypoints to my Palm OK," seems to give some weight to the first of those options, esp. if it's a serial-based Palm. Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
It mst have something to do with my serial port. I tried it with EasyGPS and it doesn't work onit either. I also hooked up another serial port cable and still doesn't work. I can download waypoints manually. I am a registered user of GSAK and Geocacher, com. I must have clicked on something I shouldn't have. Oh well, must be an old age thing. LOL! Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
Downloaded the latest version of GSAK. Enable USB port was unchecked. Still doesn't work. Bringing my StreeyPilot2610 and hooking it up ,to see if it work on it. Will let you know what happens. Jim Quote Link to comment
+Gob-ler
If you need a hand Jim I can stop over with my laptop that is working fine and we can get it sorted out. Let me know. Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
Ok Gobler, nothing I do seems to work. Brought my streetPilot and hook it up. It said couldn't init USB port this time, so I don't think it is any of my GPS's fault. Has to be something wrong with my programming. Do you still have my Telephone # I sent to you? Just in case, I will e-mail it to you again. Thanks again. Jim Quote Link to comment
+Upstate NY Geocacher
Fixed my problem! I did a restore on my Windows XP, back to September 30, 2004. Tried a waypoint download to my Garmin GPSMAP 76S and it worked perfectly. Want to thank everyone who gave me some suggestions on what to do. Again, Problem fixed. Jim Quote Link to comment
