TwoBearsAndAMoose
OK I'm obviously new to GPS & Geocaching and I have a question. My co worker took a GPS class at a local sprting goods store and the instructor told him that WASS was not enabled in Colorado and that it was only available in parts of California. Is this correct? +Desert_Warrior
Never been to CO, but it works in El Paso, provided you have a clear view of the sky. Mike. Desert_Warrior (aka KD9KC). El Paso, Texas. TwoBearsAndAMoose
Is there any way to tell if it is working by looking at my GPS units? I use a Sport Trak Pro, and my Wife is using a Gecko 201? Quote Link to comment
+zoltig
This is from Garmin wab page: How it Works WAAS consists of approximately 25 ground reference stations positioned across the United States that monitor GPS satellite data. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The corrected differential message is then broadcast through one of two geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal. I believe (correct me if I am wrong) the two sats. for WAAS are 27 & 35. Look at your Satellite screen to determine if there is a lock on for those sats. I live and cache here in Colo. and had not paid that much attention to them. I do have the WAAS enabled on my Legend. TwoBearsAndAMoose
Thanks! that answered it. I didn't even think to look at Garmin or Magellans website. Quote Link to comment

Tahosa and Sons
It works in CO, get up on a steep hill or out in the open and when it kicks in you will get accuracy below 12ft. Tahosa - Dweller of Mountain Tops. Quote Link to comment

wilywampa
the user manual for the etrex legend says that WAAS satellites are numbered 33 and above (page 5) edit: but apparently there are only two sats with numbers above 33 [This message was edited by bunnyfufu on June 23, 2003 at 08:01 PM.] Quote Link to comment
Kerry.
#35 & #47 are simply Garmin WAAS conventions based on NMEA standards. Some manufacturers simply display WAAS sats with a "W". It just so happens that there's only provision for 32 GPS satellites but what would happen if this was increased or other systems developed with more than 32 satellites in the constellation. GPS + Galileo + Glonass receivers (when ever they are built) could have access to over 70 satellites, what then? Might be a reason why Garin#35 is actually PRN122 and #47 is PRN134. Cheers, Kerry. +cameltrekor
I am in Colorado and have it enabled on my Legend. When it works (need that open sky) I get 'D' on some of the other satellite bars. Improves accuracy but drains the batteries faster. Quote Link to comment
TwoBearsAndAMoose
Looked at your location you are very near me. I'm in Lafayette. I will have to check out my manual. I think on my wife's it does the same (garmin Gecko201) I'm not sure about the sport tack pro. Quote Link to comment
