virtually what?

According to the glossary of geocaching terms listed on the "About Geocaching" page:--"Adapted from "Virtual Reality," virtual means "nothing there." So a virtual cache means there is no cache container. It's the location that is the cache itself. Nothing is normally traded, except photos and experiences."

Alot of the virtuals I've seen require you to go to a certain place and then take a pic of you there with your GPS and send that to the originator of the cache... For instance, there's one in athens, georgia where this tree is eating itself because it needs nutrients that aren't in the soil. So you have to go to the tree and take a pic of you with this tree that eats itself.

Here are a couple of examples:

Out of the Darkness, into Yosemite Valley

A Bridge in Yosemite National Park

Some places, particularly including national parks, do not allow physical caches. They are available for virtuals.

The normal preference is for a traditional cache over a virtual. The physical logbook is the preferred method of validating a find.

Some of us do enjoy a good virtual when you can't put a physical cache.

Hope this answers you question.

Welcome to the hobby!

My two cents worth, refunds available on request. (US funds only)
