+WaldenRun
I thought we were making a pretty standard recovery with three reference marks with arrows pointing toward the station. Hoever, we when got to the station, it was pointing back!: -WR Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
Almost all the ones here have the nails pointing to the Azimuth, ref. 1,2,3,etc. The nails are gone from most.but the lines still remain. I have found a few with arrows trowled with a point pointing to the reference marks and azimuth. Quote Link to comment
+WaldenRun
Almost all the ones here have the nails pointing to the Azimuth, ref. 1,2,3,etc. I believe it is less usual here because most of our hilltops have exposed ledge and boulders. The disks are normally set into granite, making it VERY difficult to fix nails around them! -WR Quote Link to comment
Z15
Those were put there by the building party so the survey crew knew where to look for the peripheral marks. Most likely done before they stated to install witness post in the late 40's. Quote Link to comment
Dan Vull
Good call Mike. As a former building/monument setting member I'll toss out a trivia question; why are most rms within 30M? Quote Link to comment
Wild T2
Double sided steel tapes were used to measure the distance from the station mark to the RMs. Zero to 100 feet on one side and Zero to 30 meters on the other. The landmark intersection stations, the reference marks, and the azimuth mark were observed in daylight. A reference mark near the station mark would be difficult to observe from a tall tower. They tended to set them as far from the station mark as they could, but not beyond the length of the tape. Never have seen a mark with nails pointing to the other marks though. Quote Link to comment
Dan Vull
T2 Good call. I grew up turning angles with a T3 and did it for eleven years. I have only seen the nail gig a couple of times. We never did though because it would cause water to collect and possibly endanger the mark. Quote Link to comment
Z15
Ever dig any holes in upper Michigan? Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
Here is one that is close to the House. It was set in 1961 What a difference a couple of years make.I noticed that picture was when I was using the Magellan GPS 2000. Now I have the RINO-120 and what a measurable diffrence. The nails are in this photo my thimb is by one and the nail is gone out of the other where the GPS is pointing. And Guess what they all have the DIMPLE MARKS Edited April 23, 2004 by GEO*Trailblazer 1 Quote Link to comment
