+JakeMaryTrent
1. What version of firmware to use? I have 4.06 now (i think) 2. What settings will get me the best accuracy? I'm in the north east USA. Thanks for your opinions! Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
As I said in my FAQ (linked below) if you're not using DirectRoute and you aren't using hardware that _needs_ 5.x, my advice is to remain with 4.06. (You will soon see a flurry of posts hailing 5.x for curing cancer and such, but that's my story and I'm stickin' with it.) The default settings right out of the box are workable. For caching, leave the coordsystem->lat/long set to "Deg/Min.mmm" (the default) and you'll do fine. Personally, I liek to run the map "track up" so my on the screen matches my view out the window, I customize the pointer screen to show EPE, ETA, and Speed, I turn map detail to "hi" , and enable pos-dest line so m goto line follows me, but these are all personal tastes. +JakeMaryTrent
Great, i'm reading your FAQ now, thanks for the link. I found about the hack were you replace you basemap with a smaller one to free up more memory for other maps (mapsend topo). Would you recommend this? Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
I can't say I do. One of my three has the 2MB basemap (which used to be much easier to find on the 'net before Magellan kiboshed their distribution) and I have to say it really stinks. Besides, if you have an STMap (and not a pro) you already have the smallest basemap of the family. And if you have a pro, your deail map memory is probably "big enough" that you shouldn't have to sacrifice most of the roads disappearing when yuo zoom out. Honestly, this made the most sense for the 330 which had an 8MB detail map and an 8MB basemap. With such small capacity, it made sense to move the dividing line between them in special cases. Since the newer units (that don't have tiny memory anyway) have a much better ratio of detail:base map size, the usefulness of this trick is diminished. Quote Link to comment
+JakeMaryTrent
I'm glad you said that because the posts that I was reading are very confusing the person refers to the 330 and STM and a couple of times i think he gets them mixeed up. So the STM has a base of 2mb and six more for detail? Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
Yes, that's the mix on STMap. See the first table at : http://www.mtgc.org/robertlipe/myfaq/Magellan_FAQ.shtml The poster in that other thread you resurrected is the result of someone confusing models. (Which isn't made any more difficult to do by the plethora of confusing names and errors in Magellan's own documentation on this subject...) Quote Link to comment
