DougDanger
Hi, I am very new here. While I was at a friends house working on his computer he showed me this website and told me a bit about this hide and search game he has been involved in for a couple years. I must say that this looks like an excellant combination of the 2 things I love most "computers and Outdoors" I think it would be a great hobby for my whole family. Can anyone suggest a GPS that is inexpensive and reliable to get started with ? I look forward to joining the hunt soon, Thank you Quote Link to comment
Nascat
Most Cachers are very tied to they’re preferences, Garmin or Magellan. Personally I started out with a ‘’Yellow ETREX’’ from Garmin got it for under $100, I’ve since moved up to a ‘’Legend’’. Check out all of the Forums especially ‘’ GPS Units and Software’’. Enjoy the Hunt, it’s great by yourself or with family. Quote Link to comment

Cachengrab
Since you have not purchased one yet you may be able to go to your local sporting goods dealer and test drive a few. Watch the garage sales here for new and used equipment. There is normally something decent for sale and like they say at a pet shelter that "it is not normal and nice for a dog to take a dump in his own yard" Quote Link to comment
+mrmnjewel
We have had very good success with our base level Magellan SporTrak Quote Link to comment
+Fritz_Monroe
I'm very new as well. This is basically what I did. Take a look at the forums. Look at GPS Receiver Info and read some reviews. Check to see if your state has a Geocaching Society like the one in Maryland. They may have a "Intro to Geocaching" class, or a get together where you can try out a few different units. Best of all, talk to your friend. Since he's been doing this for a couple years, he can show you the ropes and let you use his GPSr. You can read all you like on-line, but you won't know if you like a unit until you use it. Who knows, if his GPSr is in good shape, you might be able to persuade him to upgrade and sell you his old one. F_M Quote Link to comment
+Fritz_Monroe
Forgot to mention that I decided on the Magellan SporTrak Map. The deciding points were that it was a step up from the base model, it shows the name of the cache, not just the GC # and it just felt better to me. The Garmin Legend would be about the same level as my SporTrak Map. F_M Quote Link to comment
